"You'll never guess whose baby this is—" Sonya struggles as the grulla weanling tugs on his lead rope. She fights with him to keep his antics at bay. He's clearly beginning to annoy the stallion his handler is perched up on.

"Whose?" Reese asks, between tosses of the slobbery tennis ball in his hand. Rhett darts off across the soft arena dirt to catch it as he gives it a throw.

Sonya grins as Reese looks up at her. "Ranger's."

She gets a kick out of watching Reese's face drop. Rhett comes back, wheezing and dropping the ball at his feet once more. "You're serious?"

Sonya nods. Reese laughs as if he doesn't believer her. "No way. Ranger has babies?"

She nods again, "A whole lot of them. He's done pretty well for himself. This little punk was a gift—" Sonya does a circle as Darry sets back and tugs on his lead rope again. Trifle pins his ears, at his wit's end with the little guy. "—from Tyra, actually! We don't get to talk as much as we used to, even from when we first realized we both ended up on Jorvik…" Sonya admits. "But we'd call every now and then, and a trailer pulled up around Christmastime towing this guy and his dam out to me. Needless to say, I was shocked."

"That's very kind of her, though. D'ya think she'd be around to hang out sometime?"

Sonya frowns. She wishes she'd done a better job keeping in touch with her old best friends. In all honesty, she's not terribly sure how either of them are doing. "We could always give her a call. I dunno. Life's been crazy lately…I mean, not even just here, y'know? Back home there's a drought, I guess. Apparently they had two barns and a garage burn down…"

Reese frowns, "That's awful. Is everyone alright, though?"

"Oh, yeah." Suddenly she remembers a fact her friend might like to know. "Well… almost everyone…"

Rhett begs for the ball to be thrown again. But Reese's arm is growing tired. "Can't you take a moment?" He asks the excited pup, who wags her tail and sits pretty for him. "What happened?" His attention is turned back to Sonya.

"A saddle would be real nice right about now!"

Sonya can hardly hear her trailmate through the splashing of heavy hooves through rushing water. She laughs, hoping he'd said something funny, and clutches tight with her calves as Rhodes launches himself up over the bank of the river.

Evita and her passenger, Reese Hayes, follow close behind — he's lucky to still be on the mare at all. Knowing Evita, she'll do just about anything to keep up with her half-brother. Even if that means ditching her clearly inexperienced rider.

Sonya laughs again, this time for real, as the mare snorts and hops up on all fours onto the shore. Evita jogs steadily over to Rhodes, not minding the way her passenger is barely balancing himself on her back.

Flustered, Reese adjusts his reins (and his seat, much to his mount's relief) and lets out a huff. He smiles up at the girl in front of him, "Would you believe me if I said I hadn't been on a horse since high school?"

Sonya giggles, "I would, I fear. You've got some brushing up to do…" She nudges Rhodes on down the trail. "…Especially if you plan on sticking around for a while."

The two of them had been quite the item in their teenage years. Now grown and independent, they rarely see each other. So when, a few days ago, Reese had shown up on her doorstep, Sonya had nearly lost her mind.

"I should've let you tack up, too. That's my bad," Sonya admits, reaching up and snapping a low branch off of a tree as they venture off the riverbank and back into the woods. Somehow, Reese still gets whacked. "I just usually don't have to."

"On account of riding with people that actually do this stuff?"

"Yeah, that."

"It's no big deal. I'm having fun. And working on my core muscles." Evita jogs on without him asking, until Rhodes' tail is swishing away in her face.

She laughs again and turns to look at him. "I've missed you."

Pro tip, don't piss off your new (moody!) Muli mare while you're out doing morning chores...but on the off chance that you do, make sure you've got a solid pick-up pony.

Glimmer isn't my biggest fan right now, and I can't say that I blame her. She'd come into my possession a few weeks ago and already she's gone from the peninsula where she grew up, all the way to Wolfwell Ranch. I felt bad, stuffing her into a pasutre with some of the older gals and letting her sit.

In fact, I've felt bad stuffing all of my horses into pastures and leaving them high and dry. Kat and I have made a big move onto the mainland over the past month and with the severe winter weather, it's been hard to do much more than stomp holes through the icy water troughs and toss some hay over the fence. Tyra's been kind enough to offer us a soft landing while we're in the market for a place of our own.
Not that I don't like South Hoof, but we just needed something of our own. Who knows how long until that happens, though.

Interrupting my winter theme to bring you an entry I'm especially proud of for the tyree makeover I'm participating in! Slide 1 is simply to match the rest of my posts. Swipe to see the little background that was actually submitted!

This is Ellie, a tyree with a little bit of a leg sensitivity issue. I named her after my old mare who used to deal with the same thing :] and as a bonus, she was a bright chestnut too!

Completely and utterly destroyed these two because I thought frosted mane was the day 3 prompt instead of day 6...anyway, meet Archie (Muli #8!) and Angelica (Kavan #1!) , my new kiddos! both designed by (and angelica courtesy of) the wonderful @athena_nightbow 🩷

The OGs. Well, okay, maybe not the total OGs, but close enough. CJ is most definitely going in my will, and Evita's been around for a while now I think she deserves to be called an OG.

Wilder Winter 2025 - Prompts 1 & 4 - Winter Coat & Northwind

Unfortunately for Amor, not all horses are built the same. Apollo doesn't seem to realize that he's got an edge on his tiny pasture buddies when it comes to staying warm in the harsh South Hoof winters.
