Last year, I was admitted to a psychiatric hospital for trying to take my life. I hit rock bottom, I was no longer well enough to care for myself or make decisions about my treatment. I was very suicidal and actively harming myself. My belongings were taken. I was locked out of my room most days. I experienced verbal abuse from other patients. Alarm bells went off frequently. Most days I stared blankly at walls and out of windows. The ward doctor threatened to section me if I “do one more thing to hurt myself”. Everything was just awful, I had no control.

Now, a year later, a lot has changed. I got discharged from hospital. I had surgery and regained mobility in my leg, with a lot less pain. I started a work placement at a ceramic studio @maxabilitycharity and have learnt so much about what I can do, even with my disability. I joined @_communityfocus and finally felt I belonged in a group of like minded people who understand my struggles. I’ve created, made friends and had lots of fun. I’ve spent loads of time with my grandmother, bonding with her more than every before. I go out frequently with friends and mum and enjoy every minute of it. I can manage my emotions better. I understand myself more and advocate for my needs. I am so excited to keep learning more about myself and the things I love.

October 15th- October 21st is #multiplehereditaryexostosesawarenessweek and in hopes of raising awareness I have decided to share my story with mhe

At a young age I was diagnosed with mhe (multiple hereditary exostoses)

Mhe is a very rare bone condition which is present in about 1 in 50,000 births. Mhe causes those with it to develop mostly beingn (non cancerous) tumours on the surface of bones or at the end of long ligaments. This is a painful condition due to the tumours rubbing against nerves and blood vessels, causing stiffness, fatigue, a limited range of motion and above all, a lot of pain.

As of today there is no known cure for mhe , the only treatment is to have surgery to remove painful tumours. So far I have had 7 surgeries (and more to come), 7 tumours the size of small golf balls removed, i have 6 scars, been on crutches 3 times and in a sling 5 times. I have radial dysplasia, a deformity of the arm where the bones have grown outwards due to bone growths in between these bones. I have nerve damage in my right leg from surgery I have had years ago. I have around 10 bone tumours covering my body. I have a 50% chance of passing it onto my offspring which absolutely terrifies me. Mhe is a quite difficult illness to live with, not only because of the chronic pain, but also because of the lack of awareness on this invisible illness. I don't look ill or in pain and most of you probably would never have even guessed that I was, so I hope that by sharing my story I am also raising awareness for this incurable disease❤
