Sourgrass Beirut, Lebanon Heavy psych stoner rock rooted in the classic lineage of Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin & Black Sabbath, filtered through the tone of IDLES, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, and Jack White’s projects. The gear is central to the sound: microtonal guitars, a vocal effects pedal, theremin, and a heavy stack of fuzz pedals, run through vintage Laneys and Orange amplifiers, possibly the only band in the Arab World built around this kind of rig. The lineup is a super-group by design: singer Lorena Saab is a psychology graduate/therapist, bassist Lama Tauk is also a classically trained pianist, and drummer Ghadi Frem comes from an Arabic percussion background, shaped by fusion jazz and prog rock. Guitarist Alex Saad has been an active part of the scene and obsessed with guitar, amps, pedals, tone production and writing music for as long as he can remember. He and Lorena spent a decade together in the band Homesick before Lama pulled them into the project and Ghadi later joined to complete the unit. They were playing not just Zeppelin and Sabbath, but the wider school of ‘70s heavy rock legends, an additional training ground for their chops. Their process starts with a jam, chasing the riff that appears out of nowhere mid-improvisation and building songs from those found moments. What makes them able to spot a great riff when it happens is a deep literacy in the genre: they measure what they stumble into against both the historical greats and the current wave, bands like PPC, King Gizzard, 1000mods, Stoned Jesus, Sleep, and Electric Wizard. Lorena writes into it from there with psychological observations of the human condition and her personal history. The name comes from the Arabic word Hommayda, the sour mountain grass from the lebanese mountains they grew up in. One of Beirut’s hardest-working live acts, they tracked their debut single “Mary Kate” in Tbilisi, Georgia with Anomally Records, played Long Live Revolution Festival there, and head into the studio this September in Beirut to record their debut LP, out Q1 2027.
