Earlier this semester, I was given a file of around 530 overlapping top-down drone images of the pond at Thurman Hutchins Park to process for my Remote Sensing class. I had never heard of the park before but was surprised to learn I'd passed it many times while driving in Louisville. The software I used to process it was called Pix4DMapper, and it took the images and stitched them together to create whats called a digital surface model or DSM. There was a thermal sensor on the drone, so when I processed it the different values (or colors) on the model show the emissions in thermal infrared.

I thought this was super cool and did a lab on it, but I kept on coming back to it throughout the semester. I could maneuver the DSM however I liked and was able to see how the program mapped the surface from different angles.

One thing though that bothered me was that I didn't know how the DSM actually abstracted the pond, so I ended up going myself after finishing the assignment. There's an idea called ground-truthing, where if you perform research in an area you actually want to be at the place you're researching to gain a sense of context for the place and community you're representing. Truth is subjective, too, so it might be more accurate to call it ground-referencing.

To bridge the disconnection between myself and the place I was mapping, I went to the park a few times and took photos around the pond. I then went back to the lab, pulled up the model, and tried to place myself at the same spot where I took the pictures. It's not perfect because the camera doesn't have as wide of an angle, but there is something in how the DSM tries its best to recreate and interpolate a landscape. by @ssskyworldd

Eddies in the water, green shores and banks, spirals and low pressure centers. You see them in so many cool places. I have been sort of obsessing over this lately so my past few projects for my drawing and printing classes have reflected that.
1 and 2 are wallpapers I made on photoshop. The pink can be interpreted however you like.
3. Is my screenprinting assignment I named "Shore". His body is the sea and his head is the land but his emotions are something I havent yet figured out.
4. Is my relief self portrait I called "Mid Latitude Sun". by @ssskyworldd

My last assignment for my online art class ended up being a full body self portrait. This whole class was such a stressful experience but I definitely feel like I've improved a lot. I finally got to bust out the pirate shirt and draw lace again😊 but yeah, this was kinda fun besides the fact I havent gotten sleep in a very long time by @ssskyworldd
