$This Sunday’s sermon, “That They May Be One,” explores John 17:1–11 and Acts 1:6–14 through a simple but deeply important truth: Jesus did not come to replace God, but to reveal the heart of the one Creator more clearly to humanity. In John’s Gospel, Jesus constantly points beyond himself toward “the only true God.” His life reveals what divine love, justice, mercy, and compassion look like in human form. Then in Acts, Christ passes that same spiritual mantle to the disciples, showing that the Spirit of God is not confined to one person, nation, denomination, or institution. The same divine breath that moved through Christ now moves through humanity itself. This sermon wrestles with the dangers of religious division, nationalism, and reducing God to narrow ideological boxes. It argues that when we make faith about domination rather than unity, we betray the very prayer Jesus prayed: “that they may be one.” At a time when the world feels increasingly fractured, this message invites us to remember that all people are far more connected than we often admit, and that every act of mercy, justice, truth, and love bears witness to the living God. Join us this Sunday as we reflect on what it means to embody unity in a divided world. #ThatTheyMayBeOne #FaithAndUnity #LoveYourNeighbor #Acts1 #John17 by @st.lukeumc_brynmawr$

We do not deny the Resurrection only by rejecting Easter. Sometimes we deny it by refusing to recognize Christ beyond our own certainty. The risen Christ is still walking, still speaking, and still opening eyes.

Revelation 18:1–8 is not a prediction of the end of the world; it is an unveiling of how empire works. “Babylon” functions as a symbol for any political and economic system that concentrates wealth, legitimizes violence, and cloaks exploitation in claims of order and greatness. John exposes empire’s true foundation: excess built on death, stability secured through fear, and prosperity sustained by disposability.

The charge against Babylon is not only moral but structural. She “glorified herself” and said, “I rule as a queen”—a declaration of invulnerability that mirrors how empires deny accountability. Her sins are described as “heaped high as heaven,” not because of isolated acts, but because injustice has been normalized and multiplied. God’s judgment comes not as chaos, but as exposure. Babylon falls because her way of life cannot endure truth.

Most striking is the command to God’s people: “Come out of her, my people.” This is not geographic escape but ethical separation. Revelation demands discernment—refusing complicity in systems that profit from suffering. Empire collapses when its illusions are no longer believed.

Read carefully, Revelation 18 insists that God sides with life over domination, dignity over power, and truth over spectacle. Empire always looks permanent—until it doesn’t. Scripture reminds us that oppression is never the final word.

To our Latin American siblings across the globe—feliz Día de los Reyes. For many families and communities, Three Kings Day is the true high point of the Advent season: a celebration of joy, generosity, and God’s nearness that stretches across generations. We honor that faithfulness today.

In Matthew 2:1–12, Matthew tells the story of the Magi not as folklore, but as careful theology. The narrative opens with geography and power: Jesus is born in Bethlehem during the reign of Herod. From the start, Matthew places God’s work alongside political authority—and exposes the tension between them. The Magi arrive asking a dangerous question: “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews?” Their search unsettles Herod because divine kingship threatens earthly control.

Matthew then grounds the story in Scripture. Bethlehem is named through Micah 5, reminding readers that God’s promise emerges from places the powerful overlook. The star that guides the Magi echoes prophetic hope, drawing us back to Isaiah 60, where nations are drawn to God’s light, and Psalm 72, which imagines rulers bringing gifts in worship.

When the Magi finally see the child, Matthew is precise: they rejoice, they bow, and they offer gifts. Worship precedes understanding. Gold honors kingship, frankincense signals holiness, and myrrh anticipates suffering. Finally, warned in a dream, they refuse to return to Herod. Obedience to God reshapes their path.

Three Kings Day proclaims this enduring truth: God’s light is for all nations, and those who truly encounter it do not go home the same way.

Psalm 65 is a psalm of public thanksgiving that frames the new year not around human ambition, but around God’s sustained care for creation and community. The psalm moves deliberately: it opens with praise owed to God (vv. 1–2), acknowledges forgiveness and restored relationship (vv. 3–4), and situates God as the one who answers prayer and stills chaos—both natural and political (vv. 5–8). God is then praised as the provider who waters the earth, enriches the soil, and ensures life through attentive care (vv. 9–10).

Verse 11 stands as the theological summit: “You crown the year with your goodness; your paths overflow with abundance.” The verb “crown” signals completion and intention. The year is not random or accidental; it is encircled by divine generosity. Abundance here is not excess for a few, but provision that spills outward—touching fields, flocks, and communities alike (vv. 12–13).

Ethically, Psalm 65 invites humility. If God crowns the year, we are stewards, not owners. As the new year begins, this psalm calls us to gratitude, restraint, and shared responsibility—trusting that the God who sustained us before will provide again.

Lamentations 3:22–23 is often quoted for comfort, but its power deepens when we hear it in context. These words rise not from ease, but from devastation. Jerusalem has fallen. The people are grieving loss, displacement, and shame. Just before this passage, the writer speaks honestly about affliction and despair; just after it, the text calls the community to wait, to hope, and to examine their ways. Mercy is not denial of pain—it is what makes survival possible within it.

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning.” This is not optimism. It is theological clarity. God’s faithfulness is not exhausted by yesterday’s failures or wounds. Each day begins not with our resolve, but with God’s mercy already present. That mercy carries ethical weight: it invites patience, humility, and recommitment to justice and faithfulness.

As we enter a new year, this passage calls us to begin honestly, grounded in grace rather than fear. May we receive each day as gift, and move forward trusting that God is still faithful.

Wishing you a blessed and happy New Year from the staff and congregation of St. Luke UMC, Bryn Mawr.

Christmas morning sharpens when Matthew is allowed to speak on his own terms. In Matthew 2:13–23, the birth of Jesus is immediately entangled with older scriptures, older memories, and older geographies. The angel’s command to Joseph is precise and urgent: “Get up, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you” (2:13). Matthew then supplies the interpretive lens: “This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, ‘Out of Egypt I have called my son’” (2:15). Quoting Hosea 11:1, Matthew rereads Israel’s past to explain Jesus’ present. The “son” once named Israel is now embodied in this child. Jesus relives Israel’s story, not symbolically, but geographically.

Egypt, in Matthew’s telling, is not a place of judgment—it is a place of protection. When political power in Judea turns violent, Egypt becomes refuge. The Messiah survives infancy because a foreign land makes room for him. This is not incidental. Egypt had long been a center of religious learning, ritual life, and astronomical observation along the Nile. Matthew places Jesus’ early preservation within that ancient world, quietly affirming that God’s purposes are not confined to one people or one border.

The tragedy in Bethlehem (2:16–18) exposes the danger of power that fears its own replacement. Egypt, by contrast, shelters the promise until the time is right. Only then does the child return.

Matthew’s Christmas proclamation is clear: God’s future survives through hospitality. This season calls us to do likewise—to open our homes, communities, and resources to those most at risk. That is not secondary to the story. It is the story.

Advent invites us to reconsider Joseph—not as a silent background figure, but as a model of disciplined, courageous masculinity shaped by obedience to God rather than allegiance to patriarchy. In Matthew 1:18–25, Joseph is introduced as dikaios—a righteous man. In first-century Judea, righteousness would have justified public separation from Mary, whose pregnancy appeared to violate communal norms. Yet Matthew is precise: Joseph resolves to dismiss her quietly. His strength is not performative; it is restrained, ethical, and protective.

When warned in a dream, Joseph acts decisively. He takes Mary into his home, provides shelter, and absorbs the social risk of association. Later, in Matthew 2, he again responds without hesitation—rising in the night to flee violence, securing his family’s safety in exile. Luke’s account complements this portrait: Joseph ensures Mary has a place in Bethlehem, participates in ritual obedience, and anchors the family amid displacement (Luke 2:4–7, 21–24).

Joseph’s masculinity is active provision—physical, emotional, and spiritual. He does not dominate Mary or dismiss her worth; he stands beside her when the world devalues her. In doing so, he disrupts patriarchy from within, redefining strength as faithfulness, protection, and moral clarity. Advent calls us to this kind of manhood: steady, self-sacrificing, and aligned with God’s justice rather than cultural power.

In Matthew 2, the star is not a decorative detail—it is a theological signal. Matthew tells us that magi from the East recognize a celestial sign announcing the birth of a king, while Herod, the sitting ruler of Judea, responds with fear, deception, and violence. The contrast is deliberate. The star functions as divine guidance that recenters Israel’s sacred lineage when its political leadership has drifted into moral darkness. Herod bears the title “king of the Jews,” yet he cannot discern God’s movement; foreign sages can. Matthew’s critique is sharp: proximity to tradition does not guarantee faithfulness to God.

The star leads—it goes before them, stops, and directs worship (Matt. 2:9–11). In Matthew’s theology, Jesus himself embodies that guiding light. Where Herod clings to power through death, the child reveals God’s reign through vulnerability. That clash forces the Holy Family into exile, fulfilling Scripture by retracing Israel’s story through Egypt (Matt. 2:15). Divine light preserves the promise even when political darkness threatens to extinguish it.

Early readers would not miss the cosmic dimension. Many ancient civilizations oriented sacred architecture around heavenly lights—particularly Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, associated with divine order, renewal, and guidance in both ancient Egypt and Mesoamerica. Matthew does not name the star, but his message is clear: God provides a light from heaven to reorient civilizations when they lose their moral center.

Advent calls us to recover that discipline—to re-center our lives around the divine light that still guides us toward justice, humility, and faithful worship.

Advent invites us to stand with Zechariah and Elizabeth—two elders whose bodies bore the long memory of unanswered prayers. Luke 1 presents their story not as a miraculous detour but as a revelation of how God fulfills promises in God’s own time. The text emphasizes that both were righteous (Luke 1:6), yet their righteousness did not shield them from waiting. Instead, their faithfulness becomes the soil in which God plants a new future.

When the angel declares that Elizabeth will conceive, Zechariah’s silence becomes a theological sign. His muteness is not punishment alone; it is a forced stillness that mirrors Advent itself—a season of listening for God’s movement before we can speak about it. Elizabeth, meanwhile, interprets her pregnancy as God’s removal of shame (1:25), demonstrating that divine promise always aims at restoration.

Advent teaches us to inhabit the tension between what God has spoken and what we have yet to see. Like them, we live into God’s promises by trusting that divine timing is neither delayed nor accidental. The promise is already unfolding.

Advent begins in the season when daylight fades, yet Mary’s Magnificat insists that God’s nearness is reason for unrestrained joy. In Luke 1:46–55, Mary interprets her pregnancy as a sign that God’s long-awaited intervention has already begun. Her opening verbs—“magnifies,” “rejoices”—signal a present-tense response to a future promise. This is central to the passage’s exegesis: Mary praises God before deliverance is visible, grounding her hope in God’s past faithfulness (“according to the promise…to Abraham”).

The structure of the hymn reinforces this. Verses 51–53 use divine aorist verbs (“He has shown,” “He has scattered,” “He has brought down”), expressing God’s future justice as if it has already occurred. Mary interprets God’s mercy as an active force breaking into history now, overturning pride, lifting the lowly, and filling the hungry. Advent, therefore, calls us to rejoice not sentimentally but theologically—trusting that God’s mercy is operative even in our darkest seasons. Mary teaches us that divine light is not postponed; it emerges precisely when the world appears coldest. The coming of God is the dawn already pressing against the night.
