Not every difficult moment is a referendum

One of the more subtle ways discomfort destabilizes us is by making a temporary situation feel like it means something bigger about us. A setback becomes evidence that we are failing. Uncertainty can sound like proof that I don’t know what I’m doing. A hard season begins to sound like a verdict on the future.

But most uncomfortable moments are far less conclusive than they feel. Sometimes it is just data: I need to change something. Something isn’t working anymore. I need to adjust something. The difficult part is not allowing an isolated event to become one big, negative story about your life.

The goal is not to immediately try to feel better about what happened. The goal is to get specific. What part of the story actually changed? What feels the most uncomfortable about that change? And what is one step you can take now that moves you closer to where you want to go? Sometimes that step feels intimidating. Sometimes it feels shameful. Sometimes it feels almost too insignificant to matter. But the emotional weight of a step is not always a good measure of whether it is moving you forward.

I used to hate hearing the phrase “your circumstances do not matter.” It felt like being asked to ignore the hunger when you do not have food to eat, the bills you cannot pay, or the grief of a relationship becoming something you never hoped it would be. Those things do matter. I say that as someone still living inside the messy uncertainty — after losing my job, waiting on decisions whose timing is completely out of my control, and facing choices I once thought were almost unthinkable. Maybe the work is not pretending the circumstances do not hurt. Maybe it is refusing to let them become the final verdict on the rest of the story. taken in Pompano Beach, Florida by @st.pbijou

Our brains aren’t optimization machines. They’re prediction machines.

Every experience we have becomes data. Over time, our brains compress those experiences into predictive models and heuristics—efficient shortcuts that help us anticipate what might happen next.

We often mistake those predictions for beliefs, when in reality they’re simply our brain’s best forecast based on the evidence it has collected.

And our emotions?

More often than not, they’re what it feels like to experience the world through those predictions.

That’s why changing your life isn’t just about changing your thoughts.

It’s about giving your brain new evidence.

Every time you choose a different action, keep a promise to yourself, or respond differently than you did before, you’re showing your brain that the old prediction isn’t the only possibility.

Just like an open field gradually becomes a runway with every successful landing, your brain gradually builds a new expectation with every repeated experience.

Eventually, what once felt impossible starts to feel familiar—not because you forced yourself to believe it, but because your brain finally has enough evidence to predict it. taken in MSY - New Orleans Airport by @st.pbijou

We all know exactly what we have to do, the problem sometimes is we don’t always do it. For a variety of reasons. I challenge you be honest with yourself. And find- out what you are refusing to take action on. Don’t settle for the world as it is, work to change it. To make it, what it should be. taken in Lincoln Memorial, Washington, DC by @st.pbijou

Cheers to 27 🥂
To new aspirations, bolder dreams, and stepping fully into a different archetype — one that’s wiser, kinder, and unapologetically certain of her goals. Here’s to honoring the lessons, embracing the magic of change, and entering this next chapter with intention, awareness, and just the right touch of mystery. taken in Hotel Hartness by @st.pbijou

Elle n’avait pas besoin d’éclat pour briller.
Sa lumière venait de l’intérieur—
douce, silencieuse, et inoubliable.

Elle était l’élégance d’un souffle,
la grâce d’un instant suspendu.
