ETS Day Three

Me and @_danperez crashed at a hotel in Huntsville for a hot shower and a giant bed. We found homemade torta bread at El Gordo and started the process of making up our caloric deficit before heading back to the Bullet to wait for the rest of our crew to roll up. We took a nap in the grass and ate a giant bowl of mac and cheese.

Still watching the spot tracker, we started the Hoedown where the @gravelbois got a special Good Energy shout out and a lot of love. As it wrapped up, @felloffawagon and @mftworks’s dots were getting closer and we reported for duty at the finish line.

Glen zoomed in first with Mateo close behind, Mateo being the first ever fixed gear finisher and total Showdown Darling. @pandafulmanda rolled up a little after dark, and @theheathkid and his dad finished sometime around 5am. Couldn’t be more proud of how the gravelbois showed up and locked in this weekend 🔒 by @st3phmurphy

ETS Day Two

@_danperez, @poosmagoos, @dumeglass, and I all set out on the Lowdown route hoping for less mud and more fun, and we were lucky to get just that. It was a day of literal dream riding. Andrew and Leo were committed to finishing the route that day, while me and Dan were considering staying the night in Trinity. I decided to take it town by town, knowing to plan for plans to change.

We stopped in Kennard for a quick gas station breakfast and had pizza in Lovelady. We rolled up to Trinity around 4:30 and knew we felt strong enough to finish the last thirty miles before dark.

My Garmin had been giving me weird navigation throughout the day and finally managed to veer me off course in that final stretch. My first tip was seeing another cyclist on the same road going the opposite direction with a second siting of an aluminum palm tree being the impetuous to turn around. Got back on track and found myself at a 6-way intersection with little confidence in my navigation. I struggled for a bit trying to determine the right way to go when then-stranger, now-friend @blake_davenport1 rolled up with a fresh set of Wahoo eyes. We rolled away from the sunset and finally back to the Bullet, cheered on by the bullfrogs of Wilderness Road. I totaled the weekend at 177 miles, who knows how much elevation, and a really dirty bike. by @st3phmurphy

ETS Day One

We started the day with The Grand Depart from The Bullet Grill in Point Blank and quickly found ourselves on soggy Onalaska road, a place that has lived in infamy between me and @_danperez since last year. Hard to say what was better - me or the road conditions - but I was able to trudge through the damp sand with a little more ease and a lot less time.

The @gravelbois linked back up for lunch at the Brookshire Brothers Express in Groveton with many of the other riders, everyone feeling really good about the pace so far and excited to go forward. “Onalaska is the hardest part of the day,” we said. “It’ll be smooth sailing from here,” we said. We were summer children then.

The roads only got muddier, the mud only got stickier, and the no rain forecast turned into light showers mocking us as our legs and our bikes were already struggling. Once we got to the group camp at Ratliff, most of us were ready to call it a day - but @felloffawagon, @mftworks, and @lucio.de.la.cruz decided to forge forward, sending warnings of the roads to come.

We ate our freeze dried meals and wondered how the next day would go. Should we change route? Should we finish in two days or three? Will our bikes make it? Will we? by @st3phmurphy

Another great weekend with the @gravelbois! We rode out to @brazosbendstatepark. The whole trip totaled out to 115 miles for me and @_danperez plus a little extra for @poosmagoos. Some of the roads had a lot of traffic and weren’t that fun, but we had a lot of bayou trails and farm roads to be thankful for. The hilight was definitely having the whole crew out on the gravel for the afternoon. Shout out to @theheathkid and @disp0sition_ for sharing the ride out with us and @lucio.de.la.cruz and @not.a.dragon and everyone else for getting out there and eating some dirt up. Love training and getting stronger with these guys. 🤎💚 by @st3phmurphy

Thank you @texasshowdownseries and @bikesordeath for putting together an awesome weekend. 170 miles (plus some bonus off route miles 😅), 7500ft of climbing (the most I’ve ever done 💪), and a lot of good people rolling around me. Can’t wait for the next one 💫 by @st3phmurphy
