Arduino Mega weather station displaying temperature, humidity and air pressure in HTML5 web browser. To WiFi enable an esp8266 was added with coms between microcontroller over serial. The WiFi board has bidirectional connects to mqtt (mosquito) allowing periodic data streaming and to wake weather station on demand. The web browser is provisioned by websocket and a node.js middleware serves as bridge between mqtt and browser clients.

My microelectronics starter kit has been in storage for a few years. The location was in proximity to salt air, damp & cold. Water entered the storage containers. The result — heavy corrosion.

Afraid initially this might be toxic & danger to health. I read it's unlikely to be toxic but is caustic, so must be handled with care. I guess it should be disposed at electronics bin of local recycling centre.

Most of these projects were educational and some were prototypes - so it's not a great loss, although it's sad to lose some components. Code is still available on GitHub.

It really highlights concept that outdoor systems particularly maritime must have waterproof coatings, weatherproof, ruggedised containers..

The ESP8266 released in 2014 by Espressif was a game changer and enabler for Internet of Things (IOT).

Now with ESP32 and FreeRTOS we can write real time multi-threaded, asynchronous non-blocking applications that are thread safe.

Sounds great, but how does it work in practice?

New blog post on www.steveio.com demonstrate c++ sketch running 4 separate non-blocking tasks concurrently using FreeRTOS to schedule tasks, suspend, interrupt, queue and share data in thread-safe way with mutex semaphore locks.

Site maintenance is mostly now carried out using SSH from Android Mobile phone, it tends to crash only when we are off the beaten track away on holiday!

At present serving ~1 million annual readers (post pandemic the worldwide appetite for travel has increased significantly) with 15k project listings in nearly every country of world, 2.5k community contributed articles and 10gb of photos!

Where next? Multi-lingual offering allowing native speakers to read & publish in their regions language. Post-pandemic lockdown & travel ban listings should be reviewed with heads up on who is active at present. From content point of view we’d like to in better position to monetize our worldwide wandering team of content creators. On technical side we need additional contributor(s) to maintain, update & ultimately takeover.

LED grow lamp from indoor seed incubator Arduino DIY smart garden project — recycled for Halloween window display.

After raising culinary herbs (sadly no ganja though), several crops of cress and a batch of Eucalyptus (now trees) - we decided combination of 240v AC, watering system on metal rack in DIY home setup with homemade micro electronics without help of qualified electrician might not actually be safest experiment.

Oh & yes, those are Sparkfun lilypad smart owls with oscillating & pulsing lights made from their excellent wearables / conductive thread kit.

In next edition of Podcast smart owls will be updated to twit-twoo at passers-by 🎃🦉

Eucalyptus Tree propagated from seed indoor during UK winter in Arduino controlled smart garden / seed incubator - a few years old now & thriving.

It was cold that winter, the room had almost no ambient lighting. LED grow lamps consume much less power than Sodium lamps but we had to add heatmats.

Not a fan of pink spectrum LED grow lamp the light is harsh on eyes & unnatural. Sodium warm yellow spectrum light creates a better atmosphere. The pink spectrum LED grow lamp was recycled for a Halloween display.

We were mostly succeeded in fully automating environment control & watering using timers & sensors - managed not to electrocute ourselves with 240 volt AC or burn house down!

One World 365 website updated today to SSL (https://).

With several issuing authorities offering free certificates, TLS is rapidly becoming defacto standard across the web.

Ionos (hosting company) have made process of obtaining free DigiCert SSL certificate quick and straightforward (compared to signing via CMD line tools).

Certificate & key installed to NGINX running on Centos (Linux) virtual cloud hosting and web application config updated making https:// default protocol.

Having to manually refresh SSL certificates each year is less than ideal, an automated process would be better

All in about a days work...
