Working in the energy industry is fast, competitive, and let’s be honest – it can be a bit chaotic at times. But what keeps it all grounded for me? The people.

I’m genuinely thankful to be someone others turn to – whether it’s for career advice, a new opportunity, or just a good old-fashioned rant about the market over a coffee (or voice note 🙃).

I’ve somehow become the eyes and ears of the industry – and I wear that title with pride!

What really fills my cup, though, is seeing my referral network grow year on year. When people say, “You’ve got to speak to Nina at StaffX,” or A referral Client "I've heard such amazing things about you” – that means more than I can put into words.

Like many people in recruitment, I fell into the industry just over 20 years ago and thrived due to my passion for people and building lasting relationships.

Before starting my own business, I was fed up with the industry's reputation. I aimed to add a more personal touch, determined to prove that recruitment could be done differently - ensuring that professionalism, honesty, and integrity were maintained throughout, no matter how tough things could get.

The energy sector is dynamic and constantly evolving. I wanted to match its pace by connecting companies with talent that could drive real growth. My approach? Genuine engagement, sharing insights, and proving my commitment to their success. This was more than recruitment; it was a partnership. Building a strong network was key.

This approach has become the heartbeat of my business, helping me support thousands of companies and rewrite the recruitment story as we're not all bad, and we do have a heart. Now, my company represents what happens when you lead with values. We're not just a recruitment firm; we're a community in the energy sector, championing transparency, excellence, and genuine connections. This journey taught me that success comes from staying true to your values and making real human connections.

Over the last 20 years, I've worked with and helped hundreds of organizations build teams in the utilities and renewables sector. StaffX is the culmination of all my experience across multiple businesses, learning and developing unique talent attraction methods and applying a methodical approach that helps companies grow, scale, and retain sales and marketing teams.

Got an interview coming up?

You don't need to spend three days preparing.
But please don't turn up knowing nothing about the business either. 😅

Give yourself 30 minutes and do these five things:
1️⃣ Read the company's website and understand what they actually do.
2️⃣ Look at their LinkedIn page and see what they've been talking about recently.
3️⃣ Read the job description again and pick out examples from your experience that match what they need.
4️⃣ Prepare two or three questions you genuinely want answered.
5️⃣ Know your numbers. If you're in a commercial role, be ready to talk confidently about targets, performance and achievements.

Most importantly, don't try to memorise perfect answers.
Understand your experience and be ready to have a conversation about it.

You’ve accepted a new role, handed in your notice… and suddenly your current employer wants to talk.

More money. A new title. Maybe even promises of progression.
Counteroffers can be tempting, but before saying yes, ask yourself one thing:
Why were you looking to leave in the first place?

If salary was genuinely the only issue, the counteroffer might be worth considering.
But if you were frustrated by progression, culture, management, workload or simply felt ready for something new, an extra few thousand pounds might not fix the real problem.

Before making the decision, think about:
👉 Why did I start looking?
👉 What will genuinely change if I stay?
👉 Where does each opportunity take me in 2–3 years?
👉 Am I staying because it’s right, or because it feels safer?

A good recruiter shouldn’t tell you which option to choose.
They should give you the information you need to make the right decision for you.
