“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” · Psalm 91:1-2

The psalm does not say whoever drops by the shelter. It says whoever dwells there. Lives there. Unpacks.

Most of us treat God like a storm cellar. We run in when the sky turns green and walk back out the minute it clears. Then we wonder why we never feel rested.

You only stand in someone's shadow when you are close to them. Close enough to walk where they walk. The rest this psalm talks about is not a vacation. It is what happens when you stay close long enough to stop bracing.

And listen to how he says it. Not a refuge. My refuge. My fortress. My God. He is not describing shelter from the outside. He is talking from inside, like a man who knows where he is sleeping tonight.

So pick one storm you have been handling alone and bring it inside this week. Pray about it before you plan around it. Then look for the one who is still out in the weather, and open the door.

Father, I have been visiting when You asked me to stay. Let me live in Your shelter and rest in Your shadow, and make my door open to whoever is still out in the cold. Amen.
