September 26 is AERD Awareness Day.

AERD, also called Samter’s Triad, is a chronic inflammatory condition involving asthma, recurrent nasal polyps, and reactions to aspirin or other NSAIDs. Many people with AERD also experience a reduced or absent sense of smell, which can significantly change flavor perception and everyday life.

Because its symptoms may develop gradually, AERD can go unrecognized for years. If smell loss occurs alongside asthma, nasal polyps, or medication reactions, it may be worth discussing the complete pattern with a healthcare professional.

Click on the link located in our bio to learn more about AERD.

Meet the featured speakers for STANA’s upcoming webinar, Understanding Smell & Taste Dysfunction in Cancer Treatment.

Cancer and its treatments can affect smell, taste, eating behavior, nutrition, and quality of life, but these changes are not always recognized or addressed as part of cancer care.

On September 24 at 12:00 p.m. ET, we’re bringing together three perspectives for one important conversation:

Alissa Nolden, PhD — UMass Amherst
Researcher studying how cancer treatment affects taste, eating behavior, and quality of life.

Valentina Parma, PhD — Monell Chemical Senses Center
Chemosensory scientist focused on understanding smell and taste changes in health and disease.

Paul Dubé — Facilitator, Men’s Group, Hope & Cope
Bringing the patient perspective and lived experience of acquired anosmia and ageusia to the conversation.

Whether you are a patient, survivor, caregiver, clinician, researcher, or advocate, we hope you’ll join us to learn more about recognizing and addressing smell and taste dysfunction throughout cancer treatment and care.

Smell can tell us more about health than we often realize, but smell testing is still underused in routine clinical care.

A new review published in Frontiers in Allergy examines how point-of-care smell testing could be used more practically across clinical settings, including primary care, neurology, ENT/allergy, and pediatric care. The authors highlight the importance of choosing the right test for the clinical question, distinguishing screening from diagnosis, considering cultural and developmental factors, and using a tiered approach when more comprehensive evaluation is needed.

We’re especially proud to recognize @dr_paulejoseph, PhD, MS, FNP-BC, RN, CTN-B, FAAN, a co-author of the review and STANA Co-Founder and Board Member, for her continued leadership in advancing smell and taste research and patient-centered care.

Swipe through for some of the key takeaways from the paper.
