Happy National Poetry Day! Feels like a good opportunity to share this piece that was screened at the BFI a few months back as part of the UK Asian Film Festival - heavily preggers with my baby girl at the time! This one is for my sisters in the South Asian diaspora (pretty sure it would translate to sisters from various other diasporas too.)It speaks to the very unspoken but often present, "stand off" that can exist within our communities. It was written to break down those barriers and serve as a reminder that we are all sisters from our motherland, living in another land. That this should only ever unite us and be a source of pride. Anything else feels like an unwanted leftover of colonialism still pushing divide and conquer and has no place in our communities. This piece highlights a sense of shared experiences, heritage and natural connection. An ode to all that we really are underneath and a reminder of the ancient sisterhood that we truly belong to; a reclaiming of a joy that has always been ours. I hope you enjoy it!The biggest thanks go to @umi_bhatia who I got to collaborate with to bring this poem to life. Umi filmed and edited the entire thing including digging up family archives to get real life footage of our aunty jis, grandmothers and great grandmothers to be a part of it too!🥺Brings a whole other level to the line "we are the sisters our grandmothers fought for us to be". (Fun fact: Umi is now a really good friend and we later found out we went to the same uni and took some of the same modules, in the same year but never met! Forever thankful to the legend that is @ruhihamid for the intro that made this happen<3)#nationalpoetryday #spokenword #shortfilm #ukasianfilmfestival #insta by @standforhumanity

my top tip for surviving all heat waves / the wrath of climate crisis - find the water and take June Jordan with you 💧🙏🏽 🦚 i met the most incredible Nigerian doctor this week for a last minute appointment that I wouldn’t have had ordinarily, and we got talking about the everything of the country, the times, the world right now, and it left me reeling. She was about 30 yrs my senior and without me even saying anything about anything she said, “Listen, we’ve survived this before and we’re gonna continue to and more.” Something about the way I didn’t even ask, and she didn’t even need me to, brought tears to my eyes. She nodded and then followed up with, “You keep being and growing and loving, we are meant to be here and we belong anywhere we are. Every single one of us.” We went on to chat for another 40 mins, crying and laughing, sometimes at the same time and i left that room knowing the universe did that. That’s the energy I’m bringing with me on Friday night, this weekend at @centrala_space. For a line up of South Asian sisters - which doesn’t happen enough?! - of poetry, music, art, dance & togetherness. We need each other and we need each others art, and I’m so grateful for the spaces and the people that make it possible, love and gratitude to you @rupinderkw & @rxveena_ for making it happen 🙏🏽🧡🌺 Ticket link is you know where and will also be in my stories all week 😘 desi sisters pull up and come through and ofc everyone is welcome!!!! by @standforhumanity

WE REMAIN ✊🏽❤️‍🔥 Headline performance at @poets_palace 🎤🌺Sharing this for Palestine’s Nakba Day ‘78; 78 years since 1978, since the horrors of what has and IS STILL being done to Palestine, people and land. I wrote it on the anniversary of Partition, a Nakba of my own people, which happened only 1 year before the Palestinian Nakba in 1947. It was the largest forced mass migration ever, in all of human history. And both of those atrocities, still alive today, were caused by the same british hand. Master of all death, accountability for NONE. And yet. Despite it all we are here.We remained and we still, remain. May ALL of us who have had the horror of WS afflict our lives and lineages, never give up and never forget each other in it either. Not to trauma bond 🫠 but we all have that shared resistance within us. It rests between our bones, beneath our breath. May we always stay close to that which unites us. Onward we move, until Palestine is free ✊🏽🌺❤️‍🔥🙏🏽#nakbaday #freefreepalestine #partition #1947 #refugeeswelcome by @standforhumanity

Sacred Rage Pt 1: Reclaiming Women’s Anger “If we are to bring back Matriarchy to our communities we have to start getting in good relationship with our rage.” I have been wanting to do this for a while but I have hesitated…and I’ve sensed the hesitation back. I’ve been working hard offline locally and in community and the same thing keeps coming up: We need to get better prepared for what is ahead of us - and we can’t do it without embracing our rage. We cannot do it by denying ourselves of one of our biggest sources of fuel. Our anger is not something that needs to be tamed, swallowed or stuffed down (as taught). The glass ceiling on our progress is kept there BECAUSE of the denial of it. Anger is an emotion just like any other that needs to be expressed and released *healthily*. As emotional intuitive beings we are more than capable of doing this without it leading to the toxic aggression of patriarchy. We have been gaslit into thinking this is the only way anger exists, despite being nothing like the demons that inflict this upon us. And you know who are not as capable of dealing with their emotions? Men. But yet they gatekeep anger - AN EMOTION - and fuck up the world ostensibly with the toxic patriarchal version of it? And we are just standing back quietly suppressing our fuel whilst there is an endemic of abuse, violence & death against us and our children? Handled respectfully and in its true nature, as our bodily intelligence, as energy to channel into something powerful & change making, it would not lead to the irreparable violence and death cult extremism that is WS, capitalist, patriarchy.Women need to *reclaim* and reframe our sacred life force energy and use it to protect. our. children, sisters, mothers & wider communities. FIERCELY. I have worked to create Sacred Rage for *all* women, who know this has to change. It’s going to be a series of events unfolding throughout the year, some online and some in person, we’ll be starting next Weds 25th 7pm GMT on zoom. Join us ❤️‍🔥Link in bio or comment “Sacred Rage” below to get DM’d the link ❤️‍🔥 by @standforhumanity

I’ve been away for a little while and am stumbling around trying to configure myself somehow without life in full saturation (colour / taste / warmth / delight etc😭🙏🏽🌞🌊)I have two announcements to make and then I’ll come back tomorrow for the rest! 1) I’m headlining at @poets_palace in Brum next Weds 12th Nov WITH MUSIC 🎷 🎹 and I’d LOVE to see you there, in the city that was my first home from home at the @thelegacycoe 🔥 A quarter of the ticket sales will go to Jamaica Hurricane Relief following the devastation caused by hurricane Melissa, where we have family living in the worst hit areas. Link in @poets_palace bio and let me know if you’re coming 🙏🏽🤩2) I’ll be holding the next online moon circle for women and unbinaried folks of the global majority this Weds 5th Nov at 8pm and if you’d like to join us, send me a DM 💌 it’s the most soul affirming space I have ever had the honour of being in, let alone hold. We welcome you with open arms if you’re in need of a space to just be, release and ground in community. Can’t wait to see some of you there too 🧡🫶🏽The wildness is wilding (continuously) and I just want to say I see you. Nothing makes even a damn milligram of sense rn and it’s okay to rest and pause, to do things to restore and replenish, bc it’s needed, and bc WE are needed, as part of the global family we belong to. Love always 🙏🏽🧡🌻 by @standforhumanity

PLEASE SHARE!! 🙏🏽😘 It’s insane to me that I sit sometimes for an hour before finding the right words to open a post about saving the lives of children in 🍉. I don’t know what else there is to say other than social media posts shouldn’t be what we are relying on for these sweet babies to eat and yet somehow here we are. The situation is beyond dire, you’ve seen it for yourselves and it continues to get worse. Your donations this past year have been their sole income and has kept them still going, still somehow here.Their link is you know where ⬆️ and it’s labelled 3 baby girls in 🍉. You are SO APPRECIATED and so needed, if you can give something, anything at all, to keep these sweet babies alive; these babies and their family of 9 who have managed to survive 2 YEARS OF THIS INCESSANT HELL. Their teenage brother has been shot in the stomach by the IDF and he is constantly in need of treatment to help him. I didn’t want to include those pictures here because he deserves dignity. He’s 14, and all I could see in his photos were the tiny baby hairs growing on his upper lip and that somehow in this cruel, twisted incarnation that makes him a threat. Anything you give goes to this family, for their medication, their food, their survival. If this isn’t possible then please, please share and don’t underestimate your shares. They go such a long way to help get past the algorithm. Thank you infinitely from us all 🙏🏽🧡🌻 and we must keep the faith. Palestine WILL BE FREE 🫶🏽🍉🫶🏽🍉🫶🏽 by @standforhumanity

Drop a moon emoji below if you’d like to join the mailing list: next circle is for the NEW MOON ECLIPSE Mon 22 September 8pm BST (UK time). ✨🌒🌓🌕🌗🌘✨For the past 5 years I have been running an online moon circles for women and unbinaried folks of colour, and when I say it has completely changed my/our lives, I think that may actually be an understatement 🥲 What started during the loneliest hour in 2020 has grown into a community of unfathomable sisterhood and care, revolutionary space, strength, inspiration, sustenance and power. I see so many people talk about wanting community but never knowing where to find it. I also don’t know how anyone is doing any of this sh*t without knowing when eclipse season is (HINT right now 😭) or having a space to release during full moon because 🤯 And we have become more than community to each other now. These are my sisters, siblings, family. As black and brown women, particularly those of us in diaspora, navigating these times *with* each other is vital vital. And we use the moon as the time to assemble us, work with her energy, set intentions, let go of what no longer serves us and perhaps most importantly be witnessed as we are. 🌕🙏🏽✨I am opening up the space for more sisters to join 🙏🏽 if that’s you, drop a moon emoji below and I’ll add you to the mailing list (some spaces still available for Monday 22nd Sept ✨) by @standforhumanity

There’s so much i want to say (and am currently in the process of writing over on Substack, link in bio sign up, sign up) but every time shit like this happens - and it’s about to get a lot more frequent - my major pull is to first speak to US, those directly affected. To remind us to hold the F on to each other and come together more than we ever have. To remind us of what we come from and who the F we are!! To spend some time deepin the majesty in all of our peoples and cultures and food and music and community and laughter and joy - bc this land would be dead without it nah?! - and how all of them co-exist so fucking magically in this same land that has always had something to say about it (why is no one talking about the jealousy though👀) That is what i LOVE about the UK, the only thing that has kept me here in total honesty bc mannn look what we have created, despite it all!!! 🤩🙌🏽🎇send to a brother or sister that needs to see this and take every ounce of my love to you and yours. we are not about to let WS win in its final hour. i promise you that. 🫶🏽🌺🙌🏽🌞🧡🌊 by @standforhumanity

I know no one reads captions in reels so this is headlines only - Punjab needs us. This is what happens regularly to the bread basket of not just India but the entire world; Punjab is experiencing man made floods due to opening of dams that route Punjabs own water supply away from Punjab to other parts of India, causing floods and droughts in equal measure. Everywhere you look you will see govts hurting their people for their own endless, mindless gain. And everywhere you look underneath you will see the people are always the answer; Punjab as always is taking care of Punjab, but they need our support too. @khalsa_aid and @hemkunt_foundation are out there as ever providing aid and support. 🔗 in bio, whatever you can give is so appreciated 🙏🏽🌻🫶🏽🧡 Chardi Kala is high despite it all. Thank you @sutejpannu for this beautiful reel 🙏🏽 by @standforhumanity
