🟢As we look back on 2025, we're incredibly proud of the impact our community continues to make. Here's a snapshot of our journey in numbers!

And while these numbers reflect the work of many throughout the year, the real, immeasurable impact on the millions of people helped and the lives improved is what truly keeps us motivated every year.

Thanks to all who have supported our mission, we can't wait to see what we'll achieve together in the year to come! taken in Stanford Biodesign by @stanfordbiodesign

🟢 Since Stanford Biodesign officially launched in 2001, we have championed need-driven health technology innovation, training thousands of fellows, students, faculty, and executives to rigorously apply the biodesign innovation process, with the goal of advancing health outcomes and equity for patients around the world.

This year, we're excited to celebrate a quarter century of impact! We are deeply grateful for all whose efforts and support have helped Stanford Biodesign become THE place for innovation education, translation, and policy; and we are filled with admiration for our trainees and the contributions they're making globally.

🎉 Stay tuned for more to come on #StanfordBiodesign25 by @stanfordbiodesign

🗞️What’s better than one Stanford Biodesign-affiliated innovation being named one of @time’s Best inventions of 2025? Try four inventions!

🏆 Earflo: Matthew Oldakowski and Jozef Bartunek developed their concept for a non-invasive treatment of otitis media with effusion during their time as Stanford Biodesign Global Faculty Trainees in 2018. The product, which is modeled on a sippy cup, also incorporates elements of gamification to better engage their young users. Check out an interview with the team on our website. Link in the comments👇🏾

🏆 Teal Wand: As a 2017-18 Biodesign Faculty Fellow, Avnesh Thakor worked on a solution to enable at-home vaginal sample self-collection for cervical cancer screening to get around the barriers of discomfort, fear, time limitations, and finances that prevent many women from staying up-to-date with their screening. In May 2025, the product received FDA approval.

🏆 Sequel: As Stanford athletes, co-founders Amanda Calabrese and Greta Meyer could not find tampons that suited their highly-active routines. As Stanford engineers, they designed one. They won Stanford Biodesign’s Robert Howard Next Step Award in 2019, which helped the pair to refine their prototype, improve their brand identity, and hone their strategy for launch.

🏆 Throne: After founding a medical device company out of the Biodesign Innovation Fellowship to treat patients suffering from chronic venous insufficiency, 2009-10 alum Fletcher Wilson turned his attention to expanding public restroom access through pop-up smart bathrooms.

Congratulations to these audacious innovators! We are so incredibly proud of you all! 👏👏👏👏

“These are Stanford Biodesign Innovation Fellows - here to find new ways of improving your care.”

That’s how physicians introduced us to patients on our first day of clinical immersion.

It’s been the privilege of my life to be part of someone’s care, in different forms, wearing different hats - from medical school, to clinical practice, to public health, research, medical media and now a new hat, coming back to patient care through a different lens. Each one gave me a chance to be responsible for people’s health in both past or their present.

This time was different. For the first time, we were asked to be responsible for the future - to question whether the standard of care is enough, for everyone.

It’s a true gift to stand in the space where the gaps show up in real life and to share that space in real time as patients and health care providers navigated it.

Now comes the work of giving that gift back. Follow along as we turn the insight from the clinical immersion into new solutions for patient care. @stanfordbiodesign

📸 Photo dump: our Innovation Fellows in brainstorming action!

Throwback to a hands-on session on design thinking and prototyping our fellows experienced earlier in the program, led by Ross Venook, Stanford Biodesign's associate director for engineering; Farzad Azimpour, our assistant director, lead for design; and Innovation Fellowship alumni Beverly Tang, Ravi Dy Pamnani, Kevin Cyr, Julian Salazar, and Marisa Markovich.

This session is a favorite every year. Through a series of exercises, fellows learn to approach healthcare needs from a multidisciplinary perspective and see the iterative nature of prototyping firsthand. They brainstormed in teams and discovered the value of sketching, listing, and building early in the biodesign innovation process.

As Ross defined it: “Prototyping is a method for generating better questions about an evolving concept (...) There are questions that you could not even ask until you have tried. You don’t have to wait to have all the details in place to start testing.”

This was preparation for their clinical immersion and we can’t wait to see the shape that our fellows’ ideas will take later in the program when they enter the Invention phase! taken in Stanford Biodesign by @stanfordbiodesign

What better way to get to know Stanford's campus and the fellowship experience than from those who've walked these steps before!

In their first weeks of the program, our Innovation Fellows connected with alumni through a fun scavenger hunt across campus landmarks and a session called "Innovation Fellowship Playbook", both designed by past fellows to strengthen team collaboration and share advice for the year ahead.

Thank you so much to our Innovation Fellowship alumni Asha, Julian, Emeka, Marisa, Jens, Kevin, and to Meghana, and Meghan for keeping these fun traditions alive! taken in Stanford Biodesign by @stanfordbiodesign

🟢 Before the real work begins, our Innovation Fellows get a dry run!

During the first month of their program, our 2026–27 Fellows learned who their teammates will be for the year and immediately put those teamwork skills into action on their assigned mini-projects.

Led by Innovation Fellowship director Dan Azagury and associate director Vic McCray, the mini-projects are a hands-on sprint through the biodesign innovation process, with an emphasis on Identify and Invent, that give each team a taste of what the rest of the year has in store. Each team was assigned a clinical vignette, with no constraints on what need they choose to pursue. From there, they conducted needs finding, needs screening, concept generation, and concept screening.

Throughout these mini-projects, our fellows got a glimpse of what the next 10 months will look like; practiced making decisions as a team; got comfortable with receiving constructive feedback; and, of course, had low-pressure fun along the way!

Stay tuned as we follow their journey through clinical and community immersion! taken in Stanford Biodesign by @stanfordbiodesign

🩺 The clinical focus area for the 2026-27 Innovation Fellows is... 🥁

Each year, Stanford Biodesign selects a different clinical subspecialty as the focus for the Innovation Fellowship. Our 2026-27 cohort will identify and screen unmet needs in the space of gastroenterology!

Our fellows will spend the first month of their training in a clinical and community-based immersion to observe first-hand how care is delivered in this space.

🟢 Our 2026-27 Innovation Fellows are already one week into their program!

These early days have been all about building community with each other, with fellowship faculty and alumni, and with Stanford Biodesign's core staff. The fellows are also getting an early overview of the biodesign innovation process which they’ll soon apply in a mini-project.

Stay tuned to learn more about this year's clinical focus area! taken in Stanford Biodesign by @stanfordbiodesign
