Stanford Psychiatry's Ivy Hoang has received a fellowship grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (@nihgov) to research extended amygdala cholecystokinin in sleep disturbances, memory, and addiction.

"Collectively, the outcomes from this study will provide novel and valuable insight about the role of CCK-BNST neurons in drug seeking and serve as impetus for further research characterizing this promising neural substrate in the development of treatments for substance dependence, targeting sleep disturbances and memory processes underpinning cue-induced relapse," says Dr. Hoang.

Tomorrow, October 10, is World Mental Health Day (WMHD).

Programs across our department are shaped by perspectives from individuals with lived experience, caregivers, and community members. This year's theme, "Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change," is a reminder that their contributions are essential in advancing mental health.

Ahead of WMHD, we're proud to highlight a few of those efforts. Tap the link in our bio to read more.

In a 2024 national survey of more than 1,800 yoga professionals, respondents expressed strong support for yoga's integration into healthcare and the need for clearer scopes of practice, educational pathways, and professional credentials.

Our newest spotlight post explores what this means for clinicians, patients, and yoga professionals, and highlights @yogaxteam's complementary education pathways. YogaX is a @yogaalliance registered yoga school, offers programs accredited by @iaytorg, and provides a nbhwc-approved health and wellness coach training program.

Stanford Psychiatry's Kilian Pohl has received a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health titled "Explainable AI for Predicting Incidents of Depression in People with HIV."

Dr. Pohl is joined on this grant by Co-PI Robert Paul of @umsl and Missouri Institute of Mental Health.

"To better understand the underlying drivers of depression among people with HIV who are receiving antiretroviral therapy, we will create an explainable artificial intelligence framework that forecasts depression in individuals from multi-modal, prospective data," say Dr. Pohl and Dr. Paul.

Stanford University has received a $25 million grant from the National Institute on Aging (@nihgov) to establish a center exploring how artificial intelligence can improve life for the aging population and for people with Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD).

The center, to be named the "Stanford University Artificial Intelligence and Technology Collaboratory (SU-AITC) for Precision Health and Interventions in Aging and AD/ADRD," is led by three principal investigators: Stanford Psychiatry's Ehsan Adeli, Feng Vankee Lin, and Stanford Computer Science's James Landay.

The center will be operated in collaboration with @vapaloalto and @stanfordhai.

Stanford's Pervez Sultan and Debra Kaysen have received a grant from the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (@nihgov) to examine early intervention for postpartum PTSD.

"This study will generate essential data to guide the development of a fully powered randomized controlled trial and support scalable, accessible early interventions for postpartum PTSD," say Dr. Sultan and Dr. Kaysen.

"This project aims to reduce suffering and enhance postpartum recovery outcomes in alignment with The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)'s mission to prevent maternal mental health disorders and promote lifelong health."

Stanford Psychiatry's Yunji Park has received a grant from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to research functional brain signatures of learning disabilities across development.

"This project will investigate functional brain heterogeneity in reading disabilities across development, using large-scale datasets and advanced AI-based models," says Dr. Park.

"The findings will provide a comprehensive understanding of the neurobiological heterogeneity in reading disabilities, informing the development of evidence-based interventions and treatments for children with learning difficulties."

Stanford Psychiatry's Kaustubh Supekar has received a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health for a project titled, "Multimodal Signatures Predictive of Future Psychosis Transition in Youths at Clinical High Risk."

This project seeks to develop more accurate and robust multimodal prognostic markers for psychosis.

"Through the successful completion of this project, our multidisciplinary team is uniquely positioned to transform the current understanding of the mechanisms associated with the risk for and development of psychotic disorders, as well as identify neurobiological targets," says Dr. Supekar.

"Ultimately, these advances will lead to the development of individualized prognostic tools and early targeted treatments for psychosis and, more broadly, advance precision psychiatry."

Stanford Psychiatry's Umair Hassan has received a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health (@nimhgov) titled "Sleep theta burst stimulation for improved prefrontal neuromodulation in depression."

"We will investigate whether delivering intermittent theta burst stimulation to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex during non-rapid eye movement sleep, particularly slow-wave sleep, can enhance prefrontal plasticity in depression by aligning with naturally occurring periods of heightened neural plasticity," says Dr. Hassan.

"By leveraging the brain's intrinsic plasticity mechanisms during sleep, this innovative approach holds promise for TMS efficacy in Major Depressive Disorder, offering hope for those suffering from this debilitating mental disorder."
