525,600 Minutes

IRVINE, CA -Ā Ā In soccer, a full calendar year without a loss isn't luck—it feels right. On Friday at Great Park, the #22 Stanton Elks marked one full year since their last defeat with a dominant 5–1 victory over Simpson.

I couldn't help but wonder: is winning a habit, or just what happens when you refuse to settle?

From the start, Stanton dictated terms. Rémi De Carmejane opened the scoring at 7:58 off a pass from Hugo Guevara Mangas, then doubled the lead unassisted at 16:09. Álvaro Florín finished a setup from De Carmejane at 34:06, putting the Elks up 3–0 before halftime.

The second half brought more of the same. Yanis Aubaret extended the lead to 4–0 in the 54th minute, assisted by Lorenzo Eonga. Simpson broke the shutout in the 71st minute via Jonathen Garcia Virgen, but Stanton shut the door at 81:12 when Theodor Hertzenberg scored off a Saimon Shaqiri pass.

Stanton outshot Simpson 21–6, putting 10 shots on goal. Streaks fade, but 365 days of standard? That's forever.

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU

In the latest NAIA Men’s Soccer National Selection Committee Top 25 Poll, Stanton experienced an eight-spot drop, sliding from tied for No. 14 down to No. 22. At first glance, a steep fall like this might seem confusing for a team boasting an elite 12-0-1 record. However, understanding how the committee evaluates teams shows why simply winning matches isn't always enough to stay near the top.

The ranking process relies heavily on statistical metrics like the Ranking Percentage Index (RPI) and Area Rating Committee (ARC) standings, which weigh a program’s overall strength of schedule rather than just total wins. The formula evaluates a team's own winning percentage, but it places significant emphasis on the winning percentage of its opponents, as well as the winning percentage of those opponents' opponents.

In layman's terms, to maintain a high position in the national rankings, you actually need the teams you play against to perform well throughout the season. If a team consistently sweeps through its schedule, but its conference or region is relatively weak and losing non-conference games, the team's overall rating takes a hit. Beating lower-ranked or struggling teams generates fewer points in the statistical model, even if you dominate every game.

This dynamic is directly impacting Stanton right now, as their last three games—along with all of their remaining scheduled matches—are against teams with low rankings. Even if Stanton continues to win every single match, playing against opponents with weaker records limits how much their rating can improve. At the same time, competing programs in tougher leagues who face top-tier opponents earn far more quality-win points, allowing them to leapfrog ahead in the poll. While Stanton’s undefeated play remains a remarkable accomplishment, its future movement in the rankings will ultimately depend on how well its opponents perform down the stretch. taken in Stanton University by @stanton_msoccer

DEFYING GRAVITY

IRVINE, CA -Ā  In a city defined by sunny forecasts and short memories, some rivalries refuse to fade—no matter how many seasons pass. When the Elks stepped onto the pitch to face Orange County rival Westcliff, it wasn't just another fixture on the calendar. It was thee event of the week. Westcliff remains the only squad to hand Stanton a defeat since their transition to the NAIA—a single, stubborn stain on an otherwise spotless record, almost one year to the day.

Originally scheduled for October 12, the match was derailed when the unusual remnants of a Pacific tropical storm washed over the Southland. It marked the second time this season that Mother Nature forced Stanton to rewrite its schedule. But when the early morning whistle finally blew at Great Park on October 13, the delayed energy exploded onto the field in a flurry of early bookings. Both sides traded bookings early as referee whistles kept time, but Stanton refused to let the rhythm slip away.

In the 33rd minute, Francesco De Marco with the assistence of Yohann Garrigos, found the opening putting the Elks on the board. Just seven minutes later, Rémi De Carmejane provided the defining flourish of the half. Gliding past Westcliff keeper Olly Scott effortlessly, De Carmejane walked the ball in to double the advantage, sending the Elks into the break up 2-0.

The second half brought a relentless surge from the Warriors, who threw everything even the kitchen sink, at Stanton's backline in a desperate attempt to break the Swiss-French defense of Loic Tinner and Lorenzo Eonga. They found no quarter. The frustration on the sidelines was palpable, captured best by a Westcliff supporter who called out to a Stanton staff member:Ā "You guys are too good."Ā

Yet, it wouldn't be a proper Stanton story without a touch of dramatic tension.

In the 65th minute, André Tavares saw red, reducing the Elks to 10 men with twenty-five long minutes left to play. Westcliff launched an all-out assault, outshooting Stanton 8-1 down the stretch. But goalkeeper Alejandro Navarro anchored the defense, turning away the 2 shots on goal to secure the clean sheet. taken in Great Park by @stanton_msoccer
