“According to the central concepts of Taoism, tao is divided into a fundamental pair of opposites, yang and yin. Yang signifies warmth, light, maleness; yin is cold, darkness, femaleness. Yang is also heaven, yin earth. From the yang force arises shen, the celestial portion of the human soul, and from the yin force comes kwei, the earthly part. As a microcosm, man is a reconciler of the opposites. Heaven, man, and earth form the three chief elements of the world, the san-tsai.”― C.G. Jung

Alex Sanders (1926–1988), usually titled the “King of the Witches,” was one of the most enigmatic and influential figures in modern occult revival. A co-founder of Alexandrian Wicca alongside his partner Maxine Sanders, he is known to have brought ceremonial flourishes, Qabalistic and hermetic symbolism, and a deliberate taste of high theatrical mystery into what had been, in its older Gardnerian form, a more restrained initiatory craft. And so generally, making Wicca far more well known and palatable and interesting to outsiders.

Sanders, perhaps similarly to Aleister Crowley, enjoyed any sort of press and publicity, and would appear in a number of documentaries and articles. Dubbed “The King Of The Witches,” claiming to be a direct descendant of witches, meaning his hold on their knowledge outstripped his contemporaries. This caused members of other Wiccan groups to attack him in the press’s He would also marry Maxine Sanders, who was 20 years his junior.

“Alexandrian Wicca preserves the duotheistic reverence of the Goddess and the God, yet distinguishes itself through its synthesis: ritual magic drawn from the Western esoteric tradition—Hermeticism, ceremonial Qabalah, and elements reminiscent of the Golden Dawn, interwoven with the fertility-based currents of earlier Wiccan practice. Its rites tend toward formal structure, polarity between priest and priestess, and an emphasis on experiential initiation as the gateway to understanding.

Sanders may be understood as a catalytic figure who expanded the scope and visibility of modern witchcraft. His work helped articulate a form of Wicca that was intellectually layered, ritually sophisticated, and consciously aligned with the broader Western occult tradition.”

John Dee, Monas Hieroglyphica (The Hieroglyphic Monad)
Originally published in 1564.

As seen above, the Monad glyph is comprised of the astrological and alchemical symbols for the moon (luna), sun (sol), the four elements (elementa), and fire (ignis).

The glyph is intended to symbolises the mystical unity of all creation as influenced by celestial forces. Alchemical transmutation is also emblematised in the glyph, with the Promethean fire of Aries at the base, and silver (luna) and gold (sol) at the top, forming the Cornucopian horns of wisdom.

John Dee’s enigmatic 1564 work Monas Hieroglyphica (the text from which the above image is taken, p. 45), the content of which Dee claimed was divinely revealed to him over a twelve day period, consists of a series of twenty-four theorems interpreting his Monad glyph.

Paintings of Hyperborea/ Ancient Russia/Ukraine, painted by Ivanov Vsevolod Borisovich.

“Ivanov Vsevolod Borisovich was born on August 14, 1950 in the city of Belomorsk. He started as an amateur painter. In 1978 he graduated from the Tver Art School named after A.G. Venetsianova, having received the specialty of artist-designer. Later he worked by profession and was engaged in graphics. Participant of domestic and foreign exhibitions. In his work, his focus is Russia thousands of years ago. “

While Ivanov’s visions of a speculative prehistoric Russia are compelling, his work is informed by Russian Vedism, a fringe religious belief with some elements in common with white supremacy. Russian vedists conflate Russian identity with “Aryan” identity, though they define it as a spiritual rather than racial category that encompasses most inhabitants of Eurasia, including East Asians.

“Eden After The Fall,” drawn by Austin Osman Spare, a member of the Hermetic Order Of The Golden Dawn.

An explanation of this graphic can be found in the GD’s 4°=7° Philosophus ritual, where it is shown to the candidate and explained thus:

“The Great Goddess, who in the 3ø = 8ø degree, was supporting the Columns of the Sephiroth in the form of the sign of Theoricus (“i.e.”, of Atlas supporting the World) being tempted by the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, stooped down to the Qliphoth ... the Columns were unsupported, and the Sephirotic Scheme was shattered; and with it fell Adam the Microprosopus. Then arose the Great Dragon with seven heads and ten horns, cutting by his folds Malkuth from the Sephiroth, and linking it to the Kingdom of the Shells. The Seven lower Sephiroth were cut off from the Three Supernals in Daath, at the feet of Aima Elohim. And on the head of the Dragon are the names of the eight Edomite kings, and on the horns the names of the eleven dukes of Edom. And because in Daath was the utmost rise of the Great Serpent of Evil; therefore there is as it were another Sephira, making eight heads according to the number of the eight Kings; and for the Infernal and Averse Sephiroth eleven instead of ten, according to the number of the eleven dukes of Edom. The infernal waters of Daath rushed from the mouth of the Dragon — and this is the Leviathan. Tetragrammaton Elohim placed four letters of the Holy Name, and also the flaming sword, that the uppermost part of the Tree of Life might not be involved in the Fall of Adam.”

The above graphic is used for meditation where it is also taken to represent the state of the candidate’s inner being as he or she passes through initiation, and the work of rectification involved in it.
