"Never slept. Always dreamed."A week ago, I got to witness history alongside thousands of New Yorkers. What we were celebrating felt like so much more than a championship. It was a reflection of who we are as New Yorkers—resilient, determined, unapologetically ambitious, and bold enough to dream beyond what others think is possible. No matter how many obstacles, setbacks, or people tell us something can't be done, we keep going.Growing up in the Bronx, I've always carried that New York mentality with me: dream big, work hard, and never let your circumstances define your future. And no matter how far life takes you, never forget where you come from or the people and places that shaped you.Watching the championship game and then celebrating at the parade reminded me of that. It reminded me that every accomplishment starts as a dream, and that dreams only become reality when you keep showing up, even when the odds are against you. It fueled me to keep pushing, keep betting on myself, and keep believing in the dreams that carried me from the Bronx to places I once only imagined.No matter where I go, I'll always be a New Yorker. Being sworn into the Maryland Bar in the same courthouse where Justice Thurgood Marshall was sworn in nearly a century ago is one of the greatest honors of my legal career. It has been a blessing to spend the past two years practicing in the District Court of Maryland, where I learned invaluable lessons and deepened my understanding of what it means to be an advocate.Standing in a place so closely tied to Justice Marshall’s legacy, where his legal journey began, is a powerful reminder of my commitment to the pursuit of justice and the responsibility that comes with this profession. I am grateful for the privilege to fight for the rights and liberties of my clients while upholding the principles at the heart of our legal system, and I look forward to what this next chapter will bring.✨⚖️ by @starlikedani

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of participating in the Annual Legislative Conference hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation.Throughout the conference, I attended powerful panel sessions, including discussions on “Moving Forward in the Age of MAGA” and “Occupations, Mass Deportations, and the Threat to Black America.” It was refreshing and energizing to hear panelists speak on organizing around the issues that most impact the Black community, including systemic racism’s effects on housing, education, health, and the criminal justice system, as well as the persistent socioeconomic disparities in wealth, employment, and poverty.I’ve seen a lot of conversations about CBC “feeling different” this year and that some people weren’t as motivated to attend. While I agree that the energy was different given today’s political climate, I cannot relate to not wanting to be in the same room as changemakers during the time we need it the most.I understand that we are tired of fighting the same fights and demanding the same rights that should have been secured long ago. But if we do not continue to fight for our rights, who will?As the great @repjasmine (Jasmine Crockett) reminded us, “We have purpose, and we all stand in position, and so we need to harness that because they want us to feel powerless. They want people to sit out there helpless and hopeless. *please excuse the lag in video*Too many names to count. Too many names to list. Growing up, every time my grandmother turned on the news, it was another Black life stolen. Whether it came from the barrel of an ego-driven police officer’s gun, the careless investigation of a prosecutor, or the heavy hand of a judge’s sentence, I witnessed the over-criminalization of Black men and women again and again.‘Innocent until proven guilty’ is how it is supposed to go. But I quickly learned that in America, being Black was already enough evidence to seal your guilt before an investigation even begins. And if you are Black AND POOR, you can forget about fairness in this so-called justice system.The number of wrongfully convicted Black men and women who are either dead or incarcerated is not only heartbreaking, it is proof of the apathy this country continues to show toward Black lives. And do not get me started on the countless times police officers went overboard and violated the rights of Black people without consequence.I became a Public Defender because I believe that skin color and socioeconomic status should never determine the quality of representation or the fairness of due process in the courtroom. Justice should not be a privilege, it should be a right. That is why I have made it my duty to hold every actor in the system accountable when it comes to my clients. I force them to do their job and prove every single element of every single charge beyond a reasonable doubt, because one mistake or one act of neglect should never cost another Black life.#Publicdefender #lawyer #criminallaw #trialattorney #justice #blacklives #law #explorepage✨ by @starlikedani
