What a find! I’m going to have to nerd out and gush about this hidden gem of a watch…

Chaumet, which I only knew for their pebble-like jump hour, released the Chaumet Odysseas perpetual calendar split second chronograph in 20 pieces in the 90s. Movement and possibly design by THA Ebauche, aka F.P. Journe, Denis Flageollet, and Vianney Halter before they went on to achieve notoriety with their own respective brands.

This watch is incredible in every way, from the incredibly complicated movement which represents the pinnacle of complications as a perpetual calendar rattrapante, to the incredible case and lug design, to the dial which is pure class. by @state.of.the.collection

I had a bit of a time figuring out the right OEM strap for this. These rubber straps are idiotically expensive, and to my knowledge Patek has made at least 14 colors that would fit the 5065 (including straps made for references 5064 5066 5067 5068 5062 5072).

Black was sharp but boring.
Khaki Green was too militant.
Beige is excellent but too @justinhast
Dark blue just wasn't it.
Then I came across a post from @bazamu with this grey strap and knew we had a winner. by @state.of.the.collection

Panerai have been getting smaller recently. The Panerai Luminor Due comes in at 38mm and in this gradient baby blue I think it makes for a perfect pool watch

Thought I'd try my hand repainting this strap for the Audemars Piguet Huitieme. Got the job done with a little help from my know-it-all friend Claude. Not bad for a first timer. What do we think?

King Juan Carlos of Spain wanted a watch for hunting that wouldn't reflect light and spook game away or give away his position. In 1986, he commissioned AP to make him such a watch.

AP made him a Royal Oak in full tantalum, choosing the dense metal (a heavy element, Ta73) due to its subdued matte blue grey tone, while not giving up the quality and heft of precious metal. As far as we know, this was the first ever use of tantalum in watch making.

AP then went on to use this metal again in the huitieme pictured above, which I believe was the first serially produced tantalum wrist watch.
