It's been 31 years since the 1995 uprising at the Elizabeth Detention Center, yet we are still pushing to end the inhumanity of immigration detention.

Join the Rutgers University Department of latino and Caribbean Studies for the first launch event of "Elizabeth Detention Center: A Social History of Confinement in the United States, 1993–2025," a powerful new book that brings together the voices of formerly detained people, advocates, scholars, and community leaders to examine three decades of detention and resistance.

As protests continue at Delaney Hall, this conversation reminds us that New Jersey has long been at the center of the struggle for immigrant justice. Don't miss this important discussion with several of the book's contributors and the multiple voices of those who have experienced and resisted detention.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Join us on Wednesday, April 29th for a special public panel event to honor the inclusion of @rikers.public.memory.project oral histories into the New York Public Library collection.

This archive—consisting of ninety interviews conducted between 2018 and 2021—preserves and highlights the stories of those most impacted by Rikers Island, including formerly incarcerated individuals and their families. A panel bringing together voices behind the project discusses how these histories confront generational harms and challenge dehumanizing narratives—while also exploring how public memory can advance reparative justice.

The panel will be moderated by Shana Russell, Ph.D., RPMP's resident historian. Shana will lead a conversation with narrators Turquoise Martin and Edwin Santana and longtime collaborator Tamara Santibanez.

Join the event in-person at the main NYPL building or tune in online. Event info and RSVP can be found here: on.nypl.org/rpmp by @statesofincarceration

Join us for States of Incarceration: Connecting Stories Across Borders and Bars - a two-day national convening and dialogue to discuss the intertwined systems of immigration detention and mass incarceration -- and the movements working to dismantle them.

Find the full agenda and RSVP here: humanitiesactionlab.org/soi-convening

The convening is a step in a year-long process to reimagine States of Incarceration, a national participatory public memory project, and to develop new collective narratives and media that strengthen connections between immigration and criminal legal system advocates nationwide. by @statesofincarceration
