I Was Cleopatra

One-of-one oil ink monotype with compositional gold leaf—looking to Cleopatra VII as strategist and political actor, not a fantasy. Modeled after Ducommun’s Cleopâtre, she reclines in softness with a mind still at work: a guiding star, a shield-like seat, quiet symbols of knowledge and strategy.

A nod to Cleopatra by The Lumineers—the ache of being misremembered, reduced, rewritten.

Recent commission for two lovely collectors in NYC. This diptych includes a monotype and the largest ‘Brushstrokes’ piece I’ve made to date. The hand carved linocut had to be made on my dining table as it didn’t quite fit on my usual studio desk 😅. And I absolutely maxed out the printing area on my @ironbridgeprintmakers etching press (these pieces are each 24” x 36” which technically exceeds the recommended max size).

All that said, I really enjoyed the full-body experience of making these pieces and developing my Brushstrokes technique at this scale (which took months of trial and error to nail down). I’m very grateful for the trust my collectors give me when creating open ended work! My face when you say “surprise me!” 🤩

Newborn Joomchi VIII: Trivet

This composition is inspired by some trivets I made years ago from kitchen tile samples. They now sit on our dining table which has been full of food, friends, and family all lending a hand since the babies arrived. I wanted to celebrate the beautiful grout just as much as the colorful tiles- the care that keeps us together in challenging times.

Newborn Joomchi V: Morning Star
💫

Day breaks after a long sleepless night, curtains part and the rays sneak in
to the bedroom and the heart.

I recently went to a Tarot themed birthday party (my first big social gathering postpartum) and we were asked to each dress as the major arcana card that best represents our current reality. I chose The Star because I already had a handmade star mask but after reading about it, it settled as the perfect truth. Hope and healing after challenges. And I just so happened to make this piece the day before. Kismet.
