Wishing a very Happy Birthday to Mavis Staples.

Born in Chicago, Mavis became the lead voice of the Staple Singers while she was still a kid, and that voice has never sounded like anybody else’s. At Stax, she helped take the family group to another level, including her unforgettable lead vocal on “I’ll Take You There,” the Staple Singers’ first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and one of the defining records of the era.

Her solo work deserves its flowers, too. On Volt, Mavis stepped out with MAVIS STAPLES in 1969 and ONLY FOR THE LONELY in 1970, working with producers including Steve Cropper, Al Bell, and Don Davis. Tracks like “I Have Learned to Do Without You,” “A House Is Not a Home,” and “How Many Times” showed just how much range and heart she could bring when the spotlight was hers alone.

And the honors kept coming. Mavis has won five GRAMMYs, including for YOU ARE NOT ALONE, “See That My Grave Is Kept Clean,” “Beautiful Strangers,” and “Godspeed,” a reminder that her voice has kept reaching new generations for decades.

Still talking slick after all these years.

Jean Knight's “Mr. Big Stuff” parked itself at No. 1 on Billboard’s Soul Singles chart for five straight weeks, climbed to No. 2 on the Hot 100, and ended up ranked by Billboard as the No. 18 song of 1971. It all started at Malaco in Jackson, Mississippi, during the same stretch of sessions that also produced King Floyd’s “Groove Me.”
