Jenin is a large city with a ravaged, resource deprived refugee camp inside filled with 23,628 internally displaced human beings (via UNRWA as of 2022). @SteadyJenny documented there in 2011, & since Oct. 7th it’s become a target in Israel’s ongoing onslaught of PaIestlne. Population density in the camp is estimated at 56,257 per sq km (via UNRWA, 2022). The Camp was established in 1953 to house PaIestinlans who fled or were expelled from their homes by IsraeIi forces in 1948. 🕊️ In 1996, IsraeI handed over control of the city to the PaIestinlan National Authority to adhere with the Oslo Accords. Jenin Camp was one of the major battlegrounds during the Second lntlfada, when IsraeI launched “Operation Defensive Shield” (April 2002), with the stated aim of ‘dismantling terrorist infrastructure.’ 🙄 They encircled & entered 6 major PaIestinlan cities in the W3st Bank, among them Jenin. 🕊️ During the Battle of Jenin (April 2002), 23 IsraeIi soldiers & 52 PaIestinlans were killed. Jenin suffered extensive damage to infrastructure, & over the following years, was subject to extended curfews & target killings by the lOF. 🕊️ “Even though the attacks happened in 2002, by the time I was there in 2011- it looked like it had been 💣 a week earlier...it was by far the worst off of the 3 refugee camps I visited while in PaIestine. Despite the circumstances, the kids loved to take photos in front of the camera, laughing as they chased after me after I took their photo. I was able to give them a few Polaroids I took of them.” 🐎 The Jenin Horse, also known by its Arabic name Al-Hissan (The Horse), was a sculpture built in 2003 by the people of Jenin, along with German artist Thomas Kilpper, made with scrap metal & pieces of wrecked cars that had been destroyed during an Israel invasion of the city. Among the components of the horse was a large panel from an ambulance. They celebrate immigrant families, workers, cultural traditions, & neighborhood histories rarely represented in traditional monuments. Protecting these works is not just about art. It’s about protecting the histories that mainstream institutions have often overlooked. 🎨 Santa Ana already possesses something remarkable: one of the largest concentrations of #Chicano murals in SoCal, many located in city parks where community life unfolds. With the right policies in place, #SantaAna could become the mural capital of California.” - @alicitarojas ⚠️Community members have an opportunity to provide feedback & help shape the policy before it moves forward. Listen, the horrors be persisting y’all. I’ve expressed my disenchantment with billionaire owned apps for quite some time. Since I spend so much of my energy in several social accounts across multiple platforms, both to make a living and amplify important local and international community work, I find it especially draining to succumb to the expectation of posting on this specific account, as I do not feel a need to post to prove that I am producing as an artist or an organizer. I’ve said for a couple of decades that we have the power to be our own media; unfortunately, this has not been fully utilized since the privatization and dumbification of the Internet. I could elaborate, but I’ve been fighting drain and burn out for a minute now and do not feel compelled to go into length about much here, since nobody reads captions anymore anyways. There are seasons for outward production and sharing, there are seasons for nurturing, incubating, and harvesting, and 🪺 both are worthy and necessary. I know many of my friends who will see this already spend enough time keeping ourselves updated and informed, which is why I invite all to feast your eyes on this glorious #bluebird who exists deep in #KingsCanyon National Park. While photographing this bird I kept thinking: “this bird doesn’t know that they live in paradise” - but I know better. 🇺🇸 “Meet Gert. They call her The Mother of the AIDS Quilt. The times I met Gert have impacted me more than she knows; the more she told me about her story, the more the parallelisms of our stories became apparent. Gert is the only person that has had a hand in sewing each and every panel of the AIDS Memorial Quilt since its founding in 1987. Her mother taught her how to sew before she passed away from cancer when Gert was 9. This gift would end up changing the course of her life any impacting world history. For decades, she has helped preserve, repair, any display The Quilt as it grew to hold the world record for being the largest Quilt and largest community art project in the world. What I cherish most about Gert is how comforting she was the first time I was able to finally reunite with my mother’s AIDS Quilt that I helped make when I was 6 years old. I created her Quilt during the height of the AIDS epidemic without understanding its significance as one of the most powerful political interventions of the HIV/AIDS crisis in the U.S. Its significance lay in how it transformed private, stigmatized grief into public protest, forcing the government and the broader public to finally address the crisis. Gert’s love and care comes through in her cadence with every memory she shares; her mind a colorful kaleidoscope of triumph & heartache, her hands a narrative of pain turned into love in action. I take solace in knowing she has been taking care of my mother’s, & 50,000 others, AIDS Quilts over these past 38 years. Gert has impacted millions of people all over the world and she deserves her flowers 💐🌻🌸🪻🌺🌹🌼💐 This is a part of a larger project surrounding my mother’s AIDS diagnosis, the erasure of women diagnosed with AIDS during the epidemic, and my experiences as an AIDS orphan.
