A gift to myself.
A new design, hand-crafted with Blackwood (Acacia Melanoxylon) and Huon Pine (Lagarostrobos Franklinii). This ZilliTar is 15” and features pure wool tablet woven banding making the drum an absolute delight to hold/touch/play.
It has a natural skin and finished in Danish oil. The hand-hammered brass zills are a heavy gauge (1mm) and range in size from 2”/2.5”/3.5”
I’d be happy to craft similar custom ZilliTar drums for anyone interested. DM me if you’re like to discuss your ideas. I’m loving this one and it’s musical possibilities. Thanks me! 🙏

What’s on your workbench at the moment?

A sixty second loop around the studio.
Some treasures hanging on the wall (Even a @carlossantana guitar pick I’ve had for decades). A building tower of textured drums. A blessed drum by Terrance Coulthard from Iga Warta in the Gaman Ranges— I’m soon to spray an oil to preserve the beautiful ochre colours. It was a lucky drum to be included in the ochre ceremony last year.

Finally…the new tea tray headed for the kitchen, post Border Collie approval.

How are your studios looking at the moment?

A few tea trays I’ve carved this past week. Blackwood, Celery top and Myrtle.
Quite a meditative process and makes good use of the offcuts from drums. Slowly merging frame drums with tea? Possibly.

Making the most of timber offcuts. I’ve textured these two tea trays with my Japanese gauging chisel.
Blackwood and Celery top (Milk painted).

A growing collection of textured frame drums. All but one (Pin Oak) are featuring Tasmanian timber species.

Between six and ten hours is spent on each timber shell—a meditation— and with my favourite Two Cherries chisel from Remscheid, Germany.

Sorting through some highly figured timbers for the next series of frame drums. Most of these lengths will take to steambending but not all.

Every piece needs careful consideration before the next step of milling and preparing each length.

Sometimes I’ll stare at a piece for months before making a decision.

Always working in collaboration with the material itself.
