30–40

What can I say about this past decade? So much has happened. So much change has occurred. I’ve never been prouder of the person that I am today.
Turning 30, I was flailing and spiraling. I had just barely moved back to the United States, and I was trying to figure out what to do next. The first photo was snapped on my birthday as a dear friend @gainesc and I enjoyed some stogies and watched @beck. Later that night, I had a bit of an emotional breakdown because I didn’t feel like my life looked the way it should at 30.
Little did I know, that’s when the transformation was just beginning.
Over the past 10 years, I’ve disciplined myself, processed past hurts, and discovered what long-periods of sobriety, therapy, and reconnecting with God can really do.
There have been ups and downs. Getting married again, becoming a father, starting a new career, and discovering aspects of myself that I never knew existed has brought me to this place now, where I say goodbye to my 30s and welcome my 40s with open arms, an open mind, and a peaceful heart.
The second photo is where I stand today in my beautiful forever home, with my beautiful family. Hat still fits. 😉
Thankful to everyone who joined me along the way and to those who are still here to enjoy the ride.
Thank you for all the wonderful birthday wishes. I’ll do my best to reply to all of them individually, but I definitely felt the love from everyone this year.

Funny enough, this was one of my favorite little performances captured during the @weareplanes era.
Coming across this video brings up so many emotions for me. Not just nostalgia, but memories of who I was and what my life felt like at this time. I was fully immersed in @placeboworld but Planes was such a special group for me. I had started it with @tedduprezbrunning back in 2011, and it was a band of my peers people who were my best friends, and people I genuinely loved being around.
In a lot of ways, Planes gave me the camaraderie and friendship I was missing at the time. So many of our best moments were just little things like this. Sitting around my flat in West London, jamming, writing and playing music together simply because it felt good.
I remember exactly how good it felt in that kitchen. @char_la_la__ brought so much beauty to our music with her violin, keys and vocals, and what we as a group created together was truly special.
Things eventually fell apart, as bands sometimes do, but this was a really sweet spot for us. I miss these guys terribly.
Every band I’ve been a part of has left something different with me, friendships, memories and experiences I’ll carry forever. I’m so grateful for all of them.
This is just a little moment captured in a kitchen in West London with some of my best friends, playing this @thegetupkids cover together. But somehow, it means the world to me.

Long before @weareplanes or @the_aoks there was Florence E. Florentino.
This was the first group I was ever in where I was writing the songs, singing the vocals. The night that Evaline decided to part ways with me, is the night this group began. That’s what the song “I See Birdies” is all about.
It’s about that night, starting this band with my brothers @mattleedavis @ericdcolossaltattoo and @chrisdcolossaltattoo and stepping out on my own, if you will. Instead of being behind the kit, I knew I it was time for me to take center stage.
I loved this band so much, and we made some really great music.
Fortunately/unfortunately, once I joined Placebo, I had to leave the US and this band to go play drums for them, which was an incredible experience, no doubt. However, I can’t help but wonder what would’ve happened with this band if we decided to take it all the way. We developed a pretty solid following in a very short amount of time.
This live video here is actually from a show we played after my initial trip to the UK, when I was told that I got the Placebo gig. I had three months to come back to California, gather my things, and get my affairs in order. One of those things was a sort of sendoff/farewell gig, and this was that.
A truly incredible night, surrounded by friends and family. I’ll never forget it.

So this rad dude began his journey on the educational railway, headed to places far off and unknown.
To be fair, he wasn’t stoked about it at first, (lots of nerves you know), however all reports came back showing a wonderfully positive first day of school!

Where the Fearless Hide by Evaline, 2006

This music video was essentially a collection of home movies that we took over a few different points.

The performance aspect was filmed in our rehearsal space in Turlock, California, a one car garage sized building behind our bassist Steve’s house. We converted the space into a rehearsal room, and this is where all the magic happened for us. Once we moved out of my garage, this is where the band really began to evolve, where we all came together, and where we tried out our singer RJ for the first time.

We used to have the walls completely graffitied with all this hilarity that, once we switched to Evaline, we got serious and painted over, all but one little square of it. We lit all these candles to create a vibe, and somehow one got knocked over by RJ’s section and melted some stuff. I don’t know how we didn’t set that place on fire, but thank God we didn’t. 😂

Then there’s all the footage from our first trip out to Salt Lake City to record with Quinn, the road trip, hanging out at Quinn’s house, recording, working on music, and just genuinely day in, day out living. There’s even a point where RJ and Brett switched seats while going down the freeway. Extremely dangerous. I was actually the one in the back seat filming it, which is insane.

We also cut in footage from a trip to Santa Barbara to stay with my friend Brett, who actually directed this. We went down to the beach and just messed around. Honestly, this is one of my favorite parts of the video, just showing us as young friends who did everything together and were very silly.

That camaraderie is the best part about being in a band. You get to see the love, the connection, and the bonds that are forged.

Crazy that this all happened 20 years ago.

If you haven’t listened to the Postpartum Modesty: Portrait of Skin EP, I highly recommend you put it on. We definitely had a unique sound, and those songs still hold true to this day.

We got married in a little park during the peak of Covid.
You were 8 months pregnant with our first son, but in no way was it a shotgun wedding.
Your family were there, and the only thing missing was mine from California.
I’m sure if the powers that be had allowed it, they would have been there.
Nevertheless, we had them on screen up in the tree just over my shoulder.
We danced to Sleep Walk by Santo & Johnny.
You were beautiful.
You’re more beautiful now.
Easily the best thing I ever did with my life was to fall in love with you.
I’d do it again a million times.
Thank you for rescuing me.
Thank you for loving me.
Thank you for our 2 boys, and the life we’ve created together.
Happy 6 years my darling.
