On this day in 1894, the Pullman Strike ended after railroad owners engineered a strategy that turned the full weight of the U.S. government and federal army against the strikers.

Pullman workers manufactured sleeping railroad cars and were forced to live in a company town where the right to association did not exist, and they had to pay high rents with low wages.

In the aftermath of the strike, the railroads blacklisted many strikers, and union leader Eugene Debs was sentenced to prison for six months. Workers' fight for unionism and dignity was not extinguished, however, and continued to burn. by @steelworkers

Unions and co-ops do more than co-exist – they go hand in hand, improving workers' lives by giving them a voice on the job.

“A co-op is a way for workers to have more sovereignty over the workplace. We wanted to institutionalize that structure. Unionizing seemed like a great way to do that,” said Kevin O’Brien, co-founder of Worx Printing Cooperative in Worcester, Mass.

Workers show up every day and do the work. Corporations? They play games – often stalling, delaying or refusing to bargain contracts in good faith.

Negotiations over health care coverage, workplace safety and related issues are no place for juvenile antics—and that’s exactly why Democrats and Republicans in the U.S. House joined forces recently to pass the Faster Labor Contracts Act.

The legislation, now before the Senate, promises to fix a broken system that allows employers to flout labor law and run roughshod over workers’ rights.
