🦝 FIELD NOTE // THE FUTURE SHOWED UP EARLYThe raccoon met a mama. The conversation started the way conversations with good mamas often do. She started talking about her young human. Not grades. Not trophies. Music.She told the raccoon about a kid with a brain that simply hears the world differently. A kid who learned instruments. Wrote songs. Had music pouring out of him but didn’t have a band. So he became the band until he found his people.Last night, those people stood on the stage at @warehouseonbroadway for @stagedivekc . Mama laughed. “They’re so young they can’t even drive themselves to band practice.”The raccoon looked around the room. Seven local bands. Two stages. Musicians who had been playing for decades. Then looked back at these young humans. No hesitation. No apology. Just preparation. Confidence. Joy.The raccoon has spent enough nights documenting the Kansas City and Lawrence music scene to recognize a signal when she sees one. This was a signal. The future doesn’t arrive all at once. Sometimes it arrives one rehearsal at a time. One parent giving up another evening. One borrowed amplifier. One ride to practice.
