Self-care looks different for everyone. For me this weekend it meant not seeing or speaking to anyone. Instead I was incredibly selfish with my time and energy and prioritized writing my feature (16pgs this weekend, 112 total), exercise, meal prep, and — going to the movies. My true happy place.

I’ve been going to the movies alone since I was a teenager. I’ve never found it odd or lonely. The exact opposite. I get to be around people and experience a story together. When a film really strikes me, I’ll see it multiple times in theaters to study both it, and the audience. Do they all react the same to the same parts? No? Why do I think that is? What did I notice about the story I didn’t before?

It’s the best kind of therapy and study as both a screenwriter and movie lover. As I near the end of completing this feature, I gear up to write and direct my first short. I’ve always been a big believer in total obsession when it comes to your goals. If it’s something you love, obsession comes easy. It’s natural. Fighting it becomes hard. That’s where I am.

I feel closer than ever to my dreams and I’m so grateful I haven’t given up. I’m grateful I’m living a version of what I once dreamt of. I’m grateful to live in a place where movie going isnt casual, it’s sport. Case in point: Digger. After much backlash online I didn’t know what to expect.

I’ve truly never been more pleasantly surprised by a film. It’s a master craft in the art of storytelling, the way it challenges the audience’s suspension of disbelief right up until the credits role. To experience it with a crowd that laughed, gasped, and clapped together elevates the entire experience. Not a single person left my sold out theater until 5min into the credits. That, to me, is the effervescent magic of powerful stories. Go see it. Think for yourself. Decode for yourself. And enjoy. See you at the movies 🍿🖤🎞️

I’ve watched Donnie Darko every October since I was renting it from Blockbuster as a teen. This event was extra special as I get ready to direct my first short. Stay until the end for an inspiring story about how Richard Kelly fought for this script and his right to direct it. 🐰🖤 thank you to Fathom for putting on this event!

The through line of story, to me, is about being tempted by something that looks too good to be true when you’re in a state a desperation, and the consequences that follow when you succumb.

Amplified by not learning your lesson and doing it repeatedly, in this case, the death of all his men the further it went. Add the selfishness of ego, the desire to be right when you’re told irrefutably you cannot change the course or fate of your life, and trying anyway.

When Calypso sends him out to sea and tells him to surrender and take his punishment, because as bad as it may be, he WONT die, I cried. I felt that in my bones. As a writer, whose life’s greatest dream has been to make movies and TV, this is the feeling that inspired it all.

At the age of 17, sitting alone in a cinema, coincidentally also watching a Matt Damon film (The Departed), already knowing I wanted to be a writer…I felt something so strong, so powerful, I thought if I could one day write something that makes someone feel this deeply…what a gift. That’s when I knew.

Storytelling, in its purest form, is true magic. Thank you Christopher Nolan, for being wildly bold with the range of worlds you chose to tell your stories in, and for fighting to keep film, practical effects, and analog alive. You are, in my eyes, a hero of the storytelling medium and art of film. 🎥 Last slide for the true scale of the (actual from the film) Trojan Horse prop. Oh, and if you have the opportunity, see it in 70MM IMAX. It’s a historical feat and deserves to be seen, as they say, as Nolan intended. 🖤 taken in Universal Studios Hollywood by @steffaniebrads
