17 years ago I was told not to take art for GCSE because it wasn’t an academic subject.
In my house growing up tattoos were a completely taboo topic, unless it was being discussed how much people must surely regret them later in life.
I saw breathtakingly beautiful art sometimes, but only ever in galleries with plaques underneath with famous names on and an audio guide to explain them. It seemed to me as a teenager that art was only something that was acceptable to do if you were extraordinary. If not, it was a non-job and would never earn any money. It’s funny how the things we hear as a child we can take as fact.

Now I’m an artist and a tattoo artist. A beginner one but a tattoo artist nonetheless. This certainly wasn’t on the family bingo card for me. I am not extraordinary and some days I actually think I’m no good at all. Who defines what is and isn’t good art? However, if you check my last post you’ll see the comments of my clients so far. People who have trusted me to forever mark their skin with art and come away really happy. I will never be the Klimt of tattoo artistry but haven’t I learnt that art isn’t about perfectionism, it’s about love and creativity and making the viewer feel something. It’s a way to self express but also a way to heal, to feel, to process, to rejoice, to commemorate, to commiserate and I could go on and on.

Having spent nearly a decade in a different variety of jobs, two half completed degrees and three countries later - I’ve learnt that you can’t kid yourself. I never wanted to be a doctor, lawyer or teacher. I wanted to impress and please people by doing those sorts of jobs but soon found the reality of similar jobs wasn’t what I wanted.

I didn’t get to do GCSE art but now I can paint or sketch in my little garden shed any time I like. For the love of it, not for grades. I can tattoo. I can create. I can self express. Even my skin is an expression of art. Don’t let someone else’s blueprint for a good life define yours. “The sky is so full of stars so that everyone has their own to wish upon.” Go make your inner teenager proud♥️ by @steffie_inks
