Manhattan ranks 4th of 6.

Six street networks, one 800 metre walk each, one measurement, one ranking. Amsterdam's canal ring takes the top at 6,391 square metres, and the city that invented the commercial grid lands in the bottom half of a field that includes a medieval one.

Comment "KEYSTONE" and I'll send you the one-page workflow for free.

Made with Keystone, an AI operating system for architects. Coming soon.

In Barcelona you can see 2.1× more of the city than in Tokyo.

Same method, same view radius, same walk — synchronized. Top: Cerdà's grid opens 200-meter vistas on every block. Bottom: Shimokitazawa's alleys reveal themselves two meters at a time. Neither is wrong. They're two theories of what a street is for.

Which two cities should we measure next?

The closer: Berlin and five other cities, each on a fresh circuit. Berlin, Vienna, Budapest, Istanbul, Hamburg, Lyon.

Hamburg: 10,514 m². Lyon: 3,077 m². A 3.4× gap on these walks.

800 m ±2% loops; 450 samples; 95 m sightline cap. Visible ground in a 2D footprint model of these neighborhoods, not a citywide ranking.

Same destination. Same shortest route. Less searching. Madrid, Lyon, Montreal, Melbourne.

A* explored 13.8× fewer nodes than Dijkstra in Montreal, and 5.0× fewer in Lyon, on these matched routes.

Dijkstra and Euclidean A* use identical endpoints within each city; all routes are 2.8 km ±0.5%. This compares explored nodes, not app speed.

Driving a street and crossing it on foot are different questions. Brussels, Helsinki, Sydney, Mexico City, Seoul, Boston.

Boston: 12 mapped crossings. Mexico City: 1.

Marked crossing ways within 10 m of each selected road route, merged within 30 m. Equal route budgets. Unmapped crossings and unmarked crossing opportunities are excluded.

Where is crossing the street hardest in your city?

Berlin, exploded. Five registered layers of one urban landscape.

Terrain, water and vegetation, land use, transportation, and schematic massing.

Five layers share one frame. Schematic heights use OSM height tags, then levels ×3 m, then a 6 m fallback; relief is exaggerated. This is an urban diagram, not a surveyed building model.

How much of one square kilometre is built on? Porto, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Sydney, Osaka, Mexico City.

Mexico City: 54.9 % built ground. Copenhagen: 24.6.

Equal 1 km² windows. Mapped footprint union, with courtyard holes excluded; this measures ground coverage, not floor area or population density.

Berlin, taken apart and brought back into register.

14,121 BUILDINGS / 234 KM OF STREET / 18 KM².

The same central-Berlin frame in five layers: built mass, transportation, water and vegetation, land use, and topography. Land use is mapped use, not legal zoning.
