“It is the ampersand,” Adam Gopnik writes in the introductory essay to our September 180th Anniversary issue, “whose curling form connects, among many other things, the double name of this magazine, that exists to join opposites, urban with rural, town with country. It creates a relationship that looks less like a forced union than a fond alliance.” To celebrate almost two centuries of our own history as an American duo joined by ampersand, we invited four other American duos we love to celebrate. They star on this special cover, joined by four specially commissioned ampersands created for our 180th birthday by artists we love. And so T&C and @marthastewart48 & @karltowns, and T&C and Taylor Sheridan & The Wild West, and T&C and @corneliaguest & @ivygetty , and T&C & @annasui & @chasesuiwonders. Joined in ampersands made especially for the occasion by @konstantinkakanias @honortitus @barryblitt and @toledox2. It’s a party inside and we can wait for you to see who else turned up. Say it with us now: 180. 180? 180! “What the ampersand hath joined together, let no man put asunder” Happy Birthday T&C, you duo I love. @townandcountrymag #tandc180 by @stellenevolandes
“Everyone is Here Tonight.” Overheard, any given night, at @marcelnyc since the moment it opened: “Is that @isaacmizrahiny on the piano? Oh I love the way that @theprophetpizza writes. @griffindunne! I read his book in one afternoon by the pool at @hotelilpellicano. Wow I think that entire table just got nominated for @thetonyawards. Should I go say hi to Jill from @influenced.movie? I pay subscribe for every Substack at that table. Let’s order the Le Dome dessert Gwyneth just posted. I think I went to college with that painter. They’re together? You know whose daughter that is? He’s back from London. She walked Chanel. OMG is that Mrs. Prada?” Sometimes there are places that just seem to be where all points converge. Right now, in New York City, that place is unquestionably @marcelnyc, the @roman_and_williams_–designed restaurant in the Breuer Building, just downstairs from @sothebys. For our summer issue, we imagined what a perfect night there would look like. I just ordered a martini. A “transformational gift” is always a welcome one, but what does that mean, exactly? That’s the question at the heart of this year’s philanthropy issue and our 13th annual Town & Country Philanthropy Summit. How does an act of generosity, or service, change the world, or someone’s life, or even someone’s day? Within our pages, we invite you to join us in celebrating and studying those who have most impactfully funded new programs and new museum wings, as well as others who saw a fellow citizen’s need and tried to fix it, or those who, through simple acts of kindness, offered us a reminder of the good in the world that remains, despite it all. Our cover stars— Russell Wilson and Ciara, Tory Burch, Andrew Shue, and the Met’s visionary donors, including the Tang family, the Lauder family, and Jen Rubio and Stewart Butterfield—exemplify this idea. They THINK BIG—and we are grateful for it. Always so proud to serve this brand but never more so than on this day each year. @townandcountrymag by @stellenevolandes

Postcards from SF and the @sffallshow opening night. (Of course there’s a picture of the lamb chops.) Thank you for having us as Honorary Co-Chairs and for celebrating T&C 180. PS: I did not wear my cap inside. @townandcountrymag @sffallshow @zacposen by @stellenevolandes
Came to @crystalbridgesmuseum to lead a talk and celebrate the opening of the new @tiffanyandco exhibit here (up through March and a fascinating dialogue between pieces from the archive and pieces from the collection-American imagination explored from all angles). Left fully inspired and quite in awe of this place and Alice Walton. Thank you. And happy birthday. Have you been? We should all go. @townandcountrymag @elledecor #crystalbridges #bentonville by @stellenevolandes
Frédéric Boucheron may have been most famous for being the first jeweler to set up shop in Place Vendôme, but he had no store in New York. Still, he wasted no time establishing a presence in the city, making a name for himself in Gilded Age Gotham through clients like Alva Vanderbilt and the Astors. By the time the Boucheron brand did open a store in New York, in 2024, the legend had been well-established for more than a century. Opening October 9, a new @Boucheron exhibition at Christie’s New York charts this success story, via Art Deco bracelets and turn-of-the-century diamond bandeaux, along with new high jewelry by creative director Claire Choisne. @stellenevolandes has all the details at the link in bio. by @stellenevolandes
