Last month I turned 45 years old. I am now older than my mom was when she died. And it’s a weird feeling.

We look to our parents to be our first road map in this life, and to now be further along the journey than they made it to, feels like I’m headed into uncharted territory. I know all our experiences are different so it’s not an exact 1:1 replica of her life, but to know what’s going on in my head at all times and to think she must have been thinking some of the same things at that age connects me to her more than ever.

My mom was such a great parent, it wasn’t until I had a kid of my own that I ever even considered my mom had hopes and dreams and aspirations of her own outside of being a mom. At 45 I still feel like I’m figuring shit out and learning to be an “adult”. I’m still learning who I am. I still feel YOUNG. And to think that she must have been thinking all those same things when she got sick, is more heartbreaking than I realized. Don’t get me wrong, I always knew my mom died at a young age, but to now be passed that age is a mind-fuck.

I am working on a new series paintings that explore this feeling. I don’t know what the paintings in this new body of work will look like. I normally work through every thought and have a solid direction before starting the paintings, but this time I think it’s important that I explore this new series and let it tell me what it wants to be. I just knew that the first painting in the series had to be a self-portrait that documented what I looked like on my 45th birthday and be as accurate and authentic in painting it as I could be. by @stemandthorn

I recently painted this jacket that was auctioned off at Louder than Stigma Fest at the Kessler Theater last weekend.

@louderthanstigmafest, benefiting @amplified.minds, is an evening celebrating music, creativity, and community while raising critical funds for free mental health services across Texas. Every ticket purchased helps Amplified Minds provide free mental health support, including individual and group therapy, art therapy, and music therapy, to Texas residents ages 18 and older.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support such a great cause! by @stemandthorn

About a year ago, my daughter got into Pokémon. Like REALLY into Pokémon. She memorized all 1025 of them and what region they are from and what they evolve into and what type they are and what they are weak to. She started watching all the shows, she wanted to go to all the card shops, she got all the video games. She and my wife started to go on walks playing Pokémon Go. It’s become a whole thing.

Other than a brief stint in 2016 (when Pokémon Go came out) I never got into Pokémon. Not because it was something I wouldn’t be into, I just figured I missed the wave.

But the funny thing about watching the person you love the most put their all into something they love, is you start to love it too.

I stopped just carrying her pick ups at card shows and card shops, and started my own collection. (I’ll do a binder tour if anyone wants to see them) I was no longer admiring from a far. I was now a full fledged member of the community.

Fast forward a few months to where my wife’s best friend @wheron asks if I would like to be part of an art show he’s curating where all the artwork is painted by professional artists on actual Pokémon cards and is hosted by an actual Pokémon shop in the city. @finalformlakehighlands

All of the works were priced at $51 each (in honor of the original 151). It felt good to just paint for the love of the game. And aside from it being the most fun I’d had in months, the best part? My daughter got to be one of the artists in the show. by @stemandthorn

I had a blast painting this storage container in @pegasusparkdallas . Thank you to @fgiiifineartproductions and @downtown_dallas for the opportunity.

This piece is a stylized portrait of Dallas and its beauty. The white script spells Dallas across three of the sides. The state bird of Texas, the mockingbird, is featured on one of the sides.

This mural is tucked in the corner of the courtyard at Pegasus Park if you want to check it out. by @stemandthorn

This side of the container is based on my piece I painted in Brooklyn for @thebushwickcollective back in 2021. by @stemandthorn
