What does Earth’s ice look like from space and why does it matter?

Join @britishantarcticsurvey (BAS) researchers for a thrilling LIVE Antarctic adventure and discover how environmental changes are affecting our polar regions, and the vital work helping to protect them.

Step aboard the cutting-edge research ship RRS Sir David Attenborough for a live virtual tour and discover what life is like on board. Then, link up live with scientists at Rothera Research Station in Antarctica, a key base for polar research and Antarctic science.

You’ll also hear from @europeanspaceagency (ESA) Earth Observation scientists working from the UK and the Arctic. Discover how satellites help us understand Earth’s ice, and how scientists are taking measurements even closer to the action, using instruments small enough to cost around the same as a games console and drones that can be carried in a backpack!

Find out how measurements taken over sea ice complement observations from satellites thousands of kilometres above Earth, helping scientists build a better picture of our changing polar regions.

Plus, take part in a live Q&A with speakers at the bottom of the world!

CanSat 2026/27 registration is closing soon!

Could your students design, build and launch their own mini satellite?

CanSat gives students the chance to bring their learning together, from science and engineering to coding and maths, and turn it into something they can actually build and launch.

As one teacher from the 2025/26 competition explains, the experience goes beyond the satellite.

Students learn to work together, communicate, solve problems, think creatively, overcome challenges, and build confidence and skills they can take with them long after CanSat is over.

Because sometimes, it’s not just about what you build. It’s about what you build in yourself along the way.

Registration closes on 2 October 2026.
