On International Women in Engineering Day, we recognize engineering as a way of seeing order in the world.

Engineering is a tool, a language, a method of seeing structure where things appear unstructured.

In school I learned that desired outcomes are possible through detailed steps, techniques, and sequences that can be repeated and refined.

I learned that everything that appears singular has structure behind it.

Makeup is a clear example of this truth.

Makeup looks like one shade, one finish, or one moment of impact when it is actually a coming together of many variables.

These variables produce something that reads as one result. It is a system becoming visible.

I also learned that the more complex and intentional a system is, the more effortless the result appears.

We didn’t invent color. We learned how to structure it into an experience.

Today is about women in engineering.

And it’s about the recognition that engineering has always been broader than I realized at first: that some of the most advanced systems we interact with everyday are the ones we call beautiful. by @stemmakeupengineering
