Rooted in what matters & on a mission to do what I can to make the world more beautiful 🌻
Writing Sweeter Than Honey 🍯
↓ Pull up a chair
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
We can finally tell you what we’ve been working on. 🤍

For the past year or so, our kitchen has been full of recipe testing, sticky honey jars, handwritten notes, little helpers, and more dishes than I would like to admit.
And somehow, all of it turned into a cookbook.

Sweeter Than Honey is a collection of the recipes we make around our table, the things we’ve learned from our garden and bees, and the little traditions we hope our boys remember someday.

But we’re not quite finished. Over the next few months, we’re going to bring you along as we finalize the book—and we would love for you to be part of it. There are recipes to choose from, pages to finish, photos to take, and lots of little decisions still ahead.

So pull up a chair and come be part of the process. We are so happy you’re here!🍯🌿 by @stemmedliving

We're expecting our first freeze in Yakima tonight, so the boys went out and collected the last of our flowers and mini pumpkins that we've been working on all summer. They're having a little pop-up sale in Yakima and would love to have you come by if you're available tomorrow, Tuesday afternoon, starting at 3:30 until supplies last. They'll be selling little pumpkins, handmade bouquets, and freshly picked honey crisp apples 💐🎃🍎

How I thought I’d look writing a cookbook vs. how I actually look. 😂

Postpartum hair. Messy house. Waffles everywhere.

Nothing glamorous… but the photos of the waffles did turn out beautiful. 🧇🤍 by @stemmedliving

We love an afternoon spent snacking, reading, and playing together in the treehouse ✨

We are currently reading Winnie's Great War by Lindsay Martin and Josh Greenhut and are loving it! It's based on the true story of the real life bear who inspired Winnie the Pooh 🐻

Some of our other favorites have been The Chronicle of Narnia Series, The Magic Treehouse, Little House on the Prairie, The Secret Garden, and Charlottes Web.

What should we read next?? by @stemmedliving

So much of childhood is spent hearing, “Not yet,” “You’re too little,” or “Let me do that for you.”

But the kitchen gives me a chance to say something different: “Come help me.”

Here are 4 reasons why I think it’s important to invite kids into the kitchen:

First, small jobs build big confidence.
They can dump ingredients into a bowl, wash produce, or stir batter. What starts as a really small job slowly becomes real capability. And there is something I love about watching one of my boys stand a little taller because he knows, “I helped make this.”

Second, the kitchen is a classroom.
There is math in measuring ingredients, science in watching bread rise and butter melt, patience in waiting for something to bake, and responsibility in cleaning up afterward. And when our boys pick herbs from the garden, wash dirt off a carrot, gather honey from the farm, or turn a handful of ingredients into something our family can eat, food starts to become more than something that just shows up on their plate.

Third, I’ve noticed with our boys is that they are much more willing to try something when they have helped make it. It doesn’t mean they suddenly love every meal, but there is something about being part of the process that makes them a lot less likely to sit down and announce that dinner looks gross.

And probably the most important one:
We want raise helpers. They can make pancakes for their brothers. They can carry a plate to the table. They can help make something for a neighbor. They can clean up after a meal. These seem like such little things, but I think those little things matter.

Of course, cooking with kids takes longer. There is usually more mess. And there are times when I just need to get the job done quickly and can't accept their help.

But I’m trying to remember that the goal isn’t just to get dinner on the table. It’s to raise capable, confident, generous little people who know how to help. And I think the extra mess is worth it. by @stemmedliving

One of my favorite things about gardening with kids is how clearly they can see the connection between effort and outcome.
They can help prepare the soil, plant seeds, water, pull weeds, and eventually, they get to carry something they grew with their own hands back into the house.
The garden makes hard work tangible.
It teaches them that beautiful things usually require tending—and that the work itself is part of the reward.

There is something deeply satisfying about standing in front of a basket full of flowers or vegetables and knowing:
We helped grow this.

The garden has taught me far more than how to grow flowers and food.
It has taught me patience, hard work, humility, resilience, gratitude, generosity, the quiet power of consistently showing up, among other things.

Some of my favorite lessons have come from watching my boys learn these things with their own hands in the dirt.

Over the next few weeks, I’m sharing a little series called Lessons from the Garden, because sometimes the simplest places become our greatest classrooms.
These reflections are from another, bigger project that we've been quietly working on in the background and are excited to share more soon! 📖🌱 by @stemmedliving
