The Steel Sculptress - Cinematography clips from my latest short documentary, which dives into the work and life of Betsy Bower. I wanted to capture Betsy’s vibe and energy in this doc. Betsy is so talented and has always walked her own path. She’s an accomplished artist, welder, blacksmith, sculptress, unicycler, circus performer, fire spinner, dream sage, teacher, and the list goes on. We highlighted a handful of her skills in this doc. There’s probably too many people to mention, so a blanket statement thanking everyone involved in this should do the trick. Or watch the full doc and see the credits - 😂 Shot on @sonycine FX6, and a7siii. Graded with @phantomluts ice blue with adjustments. Lights: @aputure.lighting and @nanlite_global - Big thanks to @theartofdocumentary for their filmmaking courses focused on storytelling, they have helped me immensely. A behind the scenes look at the latest episode of Casper Stories for @visit.casper featuring Morris Carter and his authentic Oregon Trail covered wagon rides just west of Casper.

Morris is a local legend — historian, storyteller, and the real deal when it comes to bringing the past to life. If you’ve never done one of his treks, seriously add it to your Wyoming bucket list.

Huge shoutout to @mistermoralez for the BTS help as always.

Can’t we all just agree that 16x9 is better? Who’s with me? 🤠🎥 Shot on @sonycine FX6 with Leica R 35mm Summilux and @dji focus pro. #filmmaking #socialmedia #videoproduction by @stengelmedia

Car mounted shorts are fun but also scary - @tiltamax suction cup car mount eased most of my anxiety. Shot in @sonyalpha A7siii with Leica R 19mm V1. @polarpro McKinnon Helix VND with polarizer made the flares basically non existent. Shout out to @adamamick for bring that along and letting us use it - it made the shot! I tested out my VND and tried stacking a polarizer and that didn’t work at all - gave us weird visual artifacts that were unusable. Glad we tested out beforehand and identified that problem before it actually mattered. As always pre-pro and prep are key to be able to confidently deliver results for the client. A little BTS from a climbing shoot in Fremont Canyon on assignment for @visit.casper

Fremont Canyon is such a wild place to shoot - the North Platte cuts through massive canyon walls, with climbing routes stretching from roughly 40 feet to more than 400 feet.

For this shot we had a Sony FX6 + vintage Leica R 35mm Summilux + DJI Focus Pro LiDAR system hanging over the edge - somewhere around $15K worth of camera gear. Made possible by the Easyrig Minimax setup and, much more importantly, the crew at @peakrescue keeping everything (and everyone) safe.

These guys are the real pros. They were both our climbing talent and safety crew, and they provide technical rope and film-production safety for crews all over the world.

Definitely one of the more interesting places I’ve put a camera.

A lot of documentary filmmaking is reacting to real moments as they happen, but that doesn’t mean the visuals have to be accidental.

I’m in production on a feature documentary right now for @wyomingpbs and spent some time scouting the location of our main hero shot to figure out the light, where the sun will set, and how to line up my character on horseback with the landscape around him.

There are a lot of moving parts behind a shot like this - landowner permission, access, schedules, logistics, getting everyone where they need to be, and then trying to make it all happen inside a pretty small window of good light.

That kind of pre-production is a huge part of filmmaking for me. The more I can solve ahead of time, the better chance I have of being in the right place when the real moment happens - and not stressed out about dumb details like parking or locked gates when I should be focusing on the fun stuff. #filmmakingtips #documentaryfilm #videoproduction #tips by @stengelmedia

Finally got a perfect morning to knock this one out.

We’d scheduled this Fremont Canyon shoot for Visit Casper about three different times, fighting weather every round, and yesterday it finally lined up — cool, overcast, and just about ideal.

I was out there with Anthony Stangle, mostly shooting photos, B-cam, and getting some time on the new drone. Anthony was handling video, which meant plenty of running around the canyon figuring out logistics, angles, and how we were actually going to get the shots we wanted.

For me, this was a fun one technically. Instead of constantly changing lenses and trying to manufacture variety, I wanted to get punched into the climbing and shoot it from inside the action. I spent most of the day around 15–20mm, getting as close as I could and letting the environment do the rest. It honestly felt a little naked compared to how I normally shoot, but it forced me to move, find angles, and stay close to what was happening.

And we actually got to shoot some real trad climbing — cams going in, gear getting placed, climbers working routes, all of it.

Even better was getting to reconnect with some people from my old climbing days. Eric Christensen was climbing with Micah Rush and Taylor Herron, and Tye Herron was out there as well. Micah and his Peak Rescue crew handled a ton of the climbing logistics, safety, and getting the right people in place for us to actually make the production happen.

Anthony got some seriously sick footage, I got to play with some different ways of shooting, and we wrapped before Fremont Canyon decided to turn into an oven.

Pretty damn fun day making stuff in Wyoming. by @stengelmedia

I used to beg for raises for all the extra work I was doing at my healthcare job.

More responsibility, more effort, more value — but there was always a ceiling. Another approval. Another corporate hoop to jump through.

Leaving that job and betting on my own business completely changed the size of the box I get to play in.

Now, if I want to grow, learn something new, take on a bigger project, make more money, or spend a day hanging off a cliff filming climbers and hanging with my friends… I can go chase it instead of asking for permission.

There’s still risk. There are still hard days. But I’d take the pressure of building something that’s mine over waiting for someone else to decide what I’m worth.

I’m really glad I took the chance. #videoproduction #betonyourself #smallbusinessowner #climbing by @stengelmedia

A quick BTS breakdown of a 2-camera interview setup. The goal here was to make a clinic waiting room feel clean, cinematic, and controlled without overcomplicating the frame. Big soft key, controlled background color, boomed audio, and a second camera angle on a slider for pacing and options in the edit.

The final image is simple, but every piece of the setup is doing a job. #interviewsetup #lightingbreakdown #client #filmmaking by @stengelmedia

Fun setup today for @banner_health. Really liking the @aputure.lighting infinibars a lot. @chrisst307 was having fun operating b-cam on the slider. Grateful I get to work with my wife everyday 💃🏻 ❤️ by @stengelmedia
