Title: Filial Piety
Date: 2022
Medium: Glass, gouache, paper

Made to appear like a window, this piece imitates how one may look at a paper-cutting decoration and see the outside through gaps in the paper. Inspired by the Lunar New Year and different values present in traditional Chinese culture, in this interpretation of 春联, I hoped to combine ideas of celebration and the responsibilities that come with it. by @steph.tan.designs

Title: Culinary Fusion
Date: Summer 2022
Medium: Digital

This piece was inspired by the mixing of American and Chinese cuisines. As I explored different methods and ways to approach the interaction of cultures, I found food to be the most evident to me. Depicted digitally is a classic American burger configuration. However, instead of the layering of a pattie, lettuce, tomato, and ketchup, etc. typical of American culture, shown are elements typically seen in Chinese cuisine. Such ingredients include bao buns, duck, napa cabbage, mushrooms (香菇), cucumbers, and hoisin sauce.
As this was one of my first digital pieces, I wanted to prioritize composition and layout. I hope that was achieved while conveying a theme particularly close to me.

*Swipe right to see some sketches I did in preparation for this piece.

As with all my pieces, hope you enjoy and please do not reuse/repost without permission. by @steph.tan.designs
