Come with me and @explorecanada on a tour of my Homelands to celebrate National Indigenous Day!

I am from the Homalco First Nation and we are known as the people of fast running waters. Named after the powerful currents of ocean rapids that surround our homelands.

On a tour with @homalcotours you’ll get a glimpse into the relationship between the land, sea and story. One that’s been living here for generations. #ExploreCanadaCreator

If you’re lucky, you’ll also spot some wildlife.

Learn the names in our language, Ey7á7juuthem (pronounced: aya-ju-them).

White sided dolphin - kWunot (Kwu-not)
Grizzly Bear - xawgas (how-gus)
Sea Lion - kWumaqen (Kwu-mock-in)
Orca- nanqam (nan-kum)

Today is National MMIW day aka Red Dress Day

❓What is MMIW? It stands for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women girls and two spirit people.
It is a movement to bring awareness to the human rights crisis of violence against indigenous women in Canada and the US.

🔴Indigenous women make up 16% of all female homicide victims. Indigenous women also make up 11% of missing women.
Yet Indigenous people only make up 4.3% of the population of Canada.

🔴Murder is the third leading cause of death in indigenous women.
🔴4/5 indigenous women will experience violence in their lifetime.
Most cases;by non-indigenous men.

❓Why does this happen? Because when an indigenous goes missing the stereotypes hinder the search process. Leaving most families never getting answers.

✋👗There are two symbols we associate with this day: red hand print and red dress.

❓✋Why the red hand print on the face? It stands for the silence of the media and law enforcement in the midst of this crisis. Most importantly for our sisters and relatives whose voices who were not heard.

❓👗Why the red dress? back in 2010 Métis artist Jamie Black initiated the Red Dress Project. An installation art project to bring attention to missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls and 2 spirit.

Ending this begins with bringing awareness so we can break down false assumptions and remove victim blaming. Help raise awareness by wearing red today, share statistics and MMIW lists, attend prayer circles and marches when your community is having them and donate to important resources. We are stronger together.

On National day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour the survivors and remember the children who never made it home from residential schools.

I like to refer back to the analogy of the 4 posts supporting a structure, and how an Indigenous community is a structure supported by the 4 generations. Traditionally everyone has a role in the community. This is where the phrase “it takes a village” comes from.

What happens when you take away one of those posts? In this case, the children. Sure, the structure might hold for a while, sagging under the weight on one side, but eventually collapse is inevitable. By the time the children began returning home, so much structure of their communities had already collapsed.

For me, days like this are an opportunity to step back and look at the people who have been helping build these structures back up again, indigenous, and non-indigenous. We are the first generation to know the truth of what happened in these schools and while there’s still so much work to do I find hope in seeing people learn listen remember and continue moving forward.
