Happy (un)boxing day to all who celebrate!

We’re certainly celebrating the decade-in-the-making move in to our lake house.

The airstream years were a gift. Little kids, dirty dogs. The patter of rain on metal will always be my favorite sound.

The guest cabin years were also a gift. The happy math of entertaining a dozen family/friends with a two burner stove and a combined living room/bedroom/dining room.

But this home is the greatest gift of all. @gregdennee we will fill this amazing space with laughter, memories, and love. And, someday, every day will run on lake time for us. The little lamb that could. Thrilled my short story “How to Milk a Sheep” was selected by @kevinwilsonauthor for the @hingstonolsen Kevin Wilson’s 12 Days of Stories collection. A dozen short, sweet bites for this holiday season, all wrapped up in gorgeous graphics. Can’t wait to devour them all.

So proud of this kid, this team.

Back in March, Porter took a chance when he was asked to try out for U14 Bucks this year (a year up for him). He made his way on to a team not knowing a single player or coach. Gulp.

Four months later, he has improved immeasurably as a player, made eleven great friends, and found the best baseball (and life) mentors. The Bucks qualified for the PNW Regional tournament in Calgary and played the best baseball of their season this past week in Canada, making it all the way to the final four. It was magical. They left it all on the field and walked away with their heads high and memories of a lifetime.

Thanks to @bozemanbaseball for the most impactful and positive youth sports experience my kid has ever had. And thanks to Porter for reminding me….take a chance— do the scary thing— and great things can happen. by @stephanie.dennee

On this day, fifteen short years ago, @gregdennee and I accidentally got married. We thought we were going to the courthouse over lunch hour to “get married on paper in MT” in advance of leaving for our wine country wedding. We assumed that meant paperwork— signing something, copies, collating— not the actual vows and pomp. But within about five minutes, we were standing in front of a judge named Wanda, stunned and repeating all the ceremonial words. The memory is a bit of a blur for both of us, but we’re sure of two things: Judge Wanda had a gloriously patriotic manicure (an American flag on one nail, an eagle on another!) and that the words we accidentally (but very much on purpose) said to each other that day still hold true. Since we have no photo of this day— our legal anniversary— here’s one from the wedding for which actually prepared.

Happy Wandaversary Greg. It seems about right that we’d manage to get two anniversaries. One just isn’t enough for this amount of love. by @stephanie.dennee

Sound up for some satisfying ASMR of the completed first draft of a novel.

Pretty sure celebrating a first draft is very uncool. Real authors— the kind who know how to use semicolons without questioning their very existence— probably don’t celebrate their first drafts. They know first drafts are just the start, and they know that the chances of this manuscript, even after it’s been revised and polished a dozen times, may never be published. Well. Good thing I’m not here to be cool.

These pages have plot holes that are more like sinkholes, crap transitions, and grammatical errors. TKs abound. But they also have mystery, humor, suspense, too much potato salad, just enough 1990s nostalgia. These pages have characters I have fallen in love with, and they have given me the space to nibble at the edges of the questions that so often nibble at my mind. That is all worth celebrating.

I think this is my mid-life crisis, y’all (or maybe semicolons are my midlife crisis?). The necessary push to do something stupid-scary, stupid-hard, just to remind myself that I still can. Hopefully, I can share it with you someday.

After the Airstream years and tiny cabin years (both of which I loved), it’s finally time to fill this hole up with a proper lake house and lots of great memories. Highly recommend working with architect @gregdennee. He somehow knew exactly how I’d want my dream kitchen laid-out and is charming to boot. Also, his kids are adorable.

This official end of summer weekend was filled with last/cold surfs, lots of hauling and putting away, and cozy evenings with my three favorite people and two favorite doggos. Views weren’t bad either.

I left sweat, boot tread, and a little piece of my heart in the Italian Alps. Eight days following the path of WWII Australian POWs trapped in Italy, from the rice fields of Biella to their safety in Switzerland. Still processing this incredible adventure, so I’m surprisingly short on words.

Thanks to @hiddenitalywalkingtours for sharing this story and your gummy bears, the eleven strong and brilliant women on the trail with me, and the people of Northern Italy— unafraid to build stone rifugios at 11,000+ feet and guide strangers through their mountains. by @stephanie.dennee
