A little introduction . . . 💕 by @stephaniefeinmd

The best tool for sustainable weight loss: The Hunger Scale

The scale goes from -5 (empty) to +5 (stuffed)

When we eat when we’re at -2 (hungry) and stop at +2 (satisfied, not full) we’ll never overeat.

If we don’t overeat, we easily reach our natural weight (really)

Eat the foods you want.

Just eat them when you’re hungry (-2) and stop when you’re satisfied, not full (+2)

No restriction.
No deprivation.

Just listening to your body.

Try it 🙂

Have you ever eaten when you weren’t hungry? 🙋‍♀️

Most of us have.

But if you think about it, it doesn’t make all that much sense to the body.

Why do something it doesn’t need or want?

Learning to listen to and honor the body is the BEST way to lose weight permanently.

And not to worry . . . it won’t suddenly ask for kale only 🥬
or never have room for dessert 🧁

It’s you, only never famished or overly full.

It all starts with the Hunger Scale—
A simple technique you can learn in minutes.

Over-hunger leads to overeating every time

If we skip a meal when we’re hungry, that hunger grows and will push our hunger hormones into overdrive.

Then we overeat not only by eating huge quantities, but also by choosing foods that are fast and quick to chew (think big macs or pizza).

There’s nothing wrong with enjoying our favs, we just want it to be intentional and comfortable, not desperate and out of control.

Learning to eat when hungry and stop when satisfied, not full, is the best way to honor our body and our desires and still lose weight.

Let me show you how

Getting to know your “You” voice means decisions become easier and easier 💕 by @stephaniefeinmd

The Hunger Scale goes from -5 to +5. We eat at -2 (just hungry) and we stopped at +2 (satisfied, not full). When we do that, we lose weight (without restriction or deprivation).

The first step in learning to use the Hunger Scale is to identify our hunger levels.

Scroll through to hear some friends I ran into at the ASRM conference describe their answer to the question, “How hungry are you right now?”

#asrm2026

This is the extreme of hunger -5. This is often the word we use to describe it: Starving

This is another very hungry level: -4.
Not as bad as starving, but very hungry.

-3 is just how she says it, really hungry. This is the first level where we are “over hungry”.

Dr. Evans left this ambiguous enough that I used it for -2 😊

-2 is when we are hungry. I often call it “just hungry” meaning we notice we are hungry. Not “over hungry” but “just hungry”.

-2 is where we always want to eat our meals. This protects us from over eating.

This is a picture because I thought I pressed video to record but apparently didn’t 😬😜

Dr. Ryniec was a good sport and played along 💕 She was hungry, but had just recently had a snack. That puts her at -1, meaning she’s still hungry but not as much.

Zero is as you’d imagine it, not hungry and not full. Neutral.

There are many ways not to be hungry, eating certain foods is one of them.

+1 is decidedly not hungry, but not yet satisfied. You can experience it on the way up to +2 or on the way down to -2.

+2 is satisfied not full. This is where we stop eating. It’s easy to stop eating here when we start eating at -2.

Waiting to eat when we’re over hungry (-3, -4, -5) leads to over eating.

Dr. Dorette just finished eating. She very well could have stopped at +2, but I used it for +3.

+3 is Full.

When we’re starting to learn to use the Hunger Scale, often we’ll eat to +3 because it’s easier to identify (full with a little discomfort). Then once we know what +3 feels like, we eat less at the next meal to find our +2 (satisfied, not full).

I was not on my game by day three of the conference 🙄 This is another video turned picture. 🤦‍♀️

But it gives me the opportunity to illustrate +4.

Great to hear well done abstracts on social media and medicine @asrm_org 2026 day 3. And look who was moderating?!

We work in fertility. We have different stories. And we’d love for these comments to retire.

“Just adopt.”
“Have you tried…?”
“Just relax.”
“You can have one of mine.”
“Be happy with what you have.”

Even when the intention is good, the words can hurt.

And yes, “don’t give up” made the list. Encouragement can feel like pressure when you’re trying to decide what you can handle next. You deserve support whether you keep going, take a break, or choose another path.

You don’t need someone to solve it. Sometimes you need: “I’m here. Do you want to talk, or would a distraction help?”

I got some of my fertility friends together at ASRM for this one. If you spotted a new face, give someone new a follow. Different perspectives, different experiences and more people to help you feel less alone.
