Gratefulness is: When you pull open the blinds in the morning and it's not raining.🤗

A lovely bright morning here in Wicklow after a night of heavy rain.

This time, I'm using the unprinted side of the protective cover sheet from my new block of @st_cuthberts_mill Saunders Waterford watercolour paper for my morning quick sketch practice.
I WILL get around to using the actual paper soon 😁

This mornings quick sketch practice.
Another derelict house I drool over and imagine owning.
This one is on the road between Ballyconneely and Clifden.
Every time I pass, I go down to have a chat with it

I went back up to 'my' cottage yesterday and made another sketch.
Determined to celebrate mistakes,I only brought a pen with me, and sure enough, my chimney is 'off', but what could I do.😅
Back home, I added the colour from memory.
I continued with a sketch of a second cottage. This time, totally from memory. It's on the road to Easky Co Sligo.

After much trying in front of the mirror, I decided this was how skipping looks!
and this morning, I'm skipping excitedly to the @schoolhouseforart to attend a weekend workshop.
These cartoon sketches might seem silly and even childish, but remember that every time you draw, your skill improves. It actually doesn't matter if it's silly or serious.
I also take a leaf out of my 7 year old granddaughters book. Watching her pencil fly over the paper as she captures, not perfection, but the movement and energy of her characters is a learning moment for me.

This mornings sketch practice (while chatting to one of my sisters on the phone)
I'm not really interested in how the piece turns out.
This gives me the freedom to explore and make mistakes.( and chat lots)
I do get really excited by certain elements. The hens comb on the middle hen, for example. see slide 2.
I also like the fact that my pen was nearly out of ink so lines were a bit hit and miss.

This mornings drawing practice is sketched from one of my own recent photos taken along the Owenmore river ( Irish:Abhainn mhór= big river) near @ballynahinchcastle
As always, my imagination has taken over a bit as I try to balance the composition and add more interest.
If I was sketching en plein air I would have taken the time to position myself with the above in mind.
And though I've always protested about painting from photos, I find I'm enjoying the challenge of it. though I'll never strive for an exact replica and will always add my own take.😅
If any of you ( especially those who like sketching boats) would like to give this a go using the photo, be my guest😊 ( slide 2)

I arrived home last night after a gruelling 5-hour drive but a wonderful week away in Connemara.
Why gruelling?
Well, the fan in my car doesn't work.
so I had 2 choices. ( it was a hot day)
I could either drive with the windows down and put up with the noise of newer faster cars flying past me on the motorway (and getting a sunburnt right arm)
or roast😅
I alternated between the two.

Anyway, here I am this morning writing in my diary and enjoying my morning coffee.

My other and very exciting news is that I will be attending the amazing @ainedivine watercolour portraiture workshop in the @schoolhouseforart next weekend.

Hopefully, in the future, my self-portraits won't be so simplistic and will have texture, movement, and depth to them.🙏🙏

I make my way home from the sea

a quick morning watercolour and even quicker and not correctly worded Haiku as I come up to the cottage after my swim.

p.s interestingly the best Internet coverage is on the beach itself.

My philosophy regarding my morning sketch practice....it doesn't matter what I draw as long as I draw something.
A familiar scene.... my morning coffee in my favourite place. I've sketched it many times but will never feel it's a chore (or a bore)😅

Apologies lovely instagram friends, if I'm not responding /liking/commenting.
There is very little Internet connection here ( its mainly on the actual beach and then my battery can be low)
I'll catch up with all your marvellous work when I get home.
