@SceneNowUAE: A skateboard, a basketball hoop, a Hollywood celebrity, an ancient Armenian folk song—disparate elements, but all recurring motifs in the work of Stephany Sanossian.

Her mixed-media collages don’t just challenge the boundaries between East and West, tradition and modernity, memory and reinvention—they dismantle them entirely.

Born and raised in Aleppo, Syria, of Armenian descent, and currently creating art between the Emirates and Lebanon, Sanossian’s work is shaped by a profound sense of movement—across places, histories, and identities. Her pieces ask urgent questions: What does it mean to belong? How does nostalgia shape identity? And what are roots, if not connections?

A multidisciplinary artist and designer, Sanossian moves fluidly between collage, installation, digital art, and traditional Syrian craftsmanship. One moment, she’s reconstructing Aleppo’s souq with superimposed images of Kim Kardashian; the next, she’s collaborating with a craftsman in Damascus to create handmade Syrian marquetry. Nothing is off-limits in her world—except artistic stagnation.

Her latest installation, Beneath the Ashes, which debuted at the ‘Next Chapter Edition 1’ exhibit by Iris Contemporary Space at Foundry Downtown in Dubai, draws on the poetry of Adonis, the legendary Syrian-Lebanese writer. The piece is rooted in displacement and memory, weaving in the lines:

“Beneath the ashes, I search for my roots,
For the first tales the sun wrote on the face of trees.”

“Identity is both inherited and created,” Sanossian says. “I wanted to explore what it means to hold on to something that constantly shifts.”

| Belong to the East as the Sun Does.

The work borrows its words from Elia Abu Madi: “I belong to the East as the sun does.” We leave, we change, and build lives elsewhere, but roots do not need a place to remain. We carry them with us, whether we choose to or not.

Meet Stephany Sanossian, Gaida Almogren, and Cherif Morsi, working together on a site-responsive urban installation that explores the city as a source of form, memory, and inspiration.

Bringing together perspectives from Syria, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, the collaboration translates everyday urban experiences into an installation shaped by urban observation, public space design thinking, material exploration, and research into local narratives and movement patterns.

The project explores one question: How does the city shape the way we see, move, and belong?

Follow their journey as the collaboration comes to life at TheMENAEdit Design Exhibition during Cairo Design Week.

TheMENAEdit is a Multidisciplinary Design Exhibition bringing together 21 Creatives from +10 countries. It marks one of the first cross-collaborative platforms of its kind, creating new dialogues across disciplines, cultures, and creative practices.

This project is developed in collaboration with @designpointegypt and @creativedistricts and will be presented at @cairo.design.week

Do You Believe in Magic? begins with something we are taught as children and slowly learn to question as adults: the possibility of magic. The work moves between inherited memory and a shared sunset, a horizon that belongs to everyone, wherever they come from. Life unfolds somewhere between chance and what we try to control. Forme, magic exists somewhere in between.

Stephany Sanossian @stephanysanossian spent two weeks in a small Italian village with no delivery apps, no city noise and no pressure to produce a finished result. Instead, she found herself working with thousands of hand-painted dots, becoming increasingly drawn to earthy colours and textures, and learning as much from fellow artists and late-night conversations as from the work itself.

In our latest interview, Stephany takes us inside the reality of an artist residency — from life in an 1800s villa surrounded by vineyards to the question many artists eventually ask themselves: how do you actually get accepted into one?

𝙊𝙣𝙚 𝙈𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙖𝙩 𝙖 𝙏𝙞𝙢𝙚.
This work talks about life as a continuous game of movement, pause, and decision. Like a basketball coach’s table, it is a space of strategy and uncertainty. Some moves are calculated, others improvised. Both shape the outcome.

Color plays a central role as an emotional register. The blues of night and the warmth of sunset and sunrise mark cycles we all pass through. Our experiences differ, but the patterns remain shared, built through repetition, discipline, and collective memory.

What appears fixed is never still.

A broken skateboard becomes a heart because people resist letting go. Instead, they choose to remember, honor, and transform what carried movement, impact, and time.

Skate culture is often associated with toughness, rebellion, and impact. Shaping it into a heart introduces softness, care and vulnerability.
This contrast that I love is conscious. It reframes the artwork not as damage, but as memory, and resistance not as aggression, but as emotional endurance.
