After 7 years of building Solara, here are 7 founder lessons I wish someone had told me on Day 1. 1. Being an outsider can be your biggest advantage. Not coming from the beauty industry meant I wasn’t afraid to question the “rules.” Sometimes not knowing the template is exactly how you build something different. 2. Comparison is one of the fastest ways to lose momentum. Social media is a highlight reel, not a balance sheet. Stay focused on your own scoreboard. 3. Strong values outperform trends and lead to longevity. Products evolve. Marketing changes. Algorithms shift. But doing right by people never goes out of style. 4. You don’t have to become a content creator to become a successful founder. The pressure to “build in public” has convinced too many brilliant people that visibility matters more than building. It doesn’t. 5. Only build with people who believe in your vision. Retailers. Employees. Agencies. Investors. Vendors. If they don’t genuinely believe in what you’re building, keep looking. 6. A “no” is rarely the end of the story. Some no’s are protecting you. Some are simply asking you to come back stronger. 7. Trust your gut. Always. Every time I ignored my instincts, I eventually wished I hadn’t. Thank you for seven years of trusting us with your skin, your questions, and your honesty. Here’s to many more. Seven years ago, I made a decision that changed my life. I wasn't trying to build a company. I was simply trying to solve a problem for my family. I had no beauty background, no roadmap or insider connections. Just a firm belief that mineral sunscreen could be better for us... AND actually feel better to wear (we used peptides back in 2019!). There were plenty of moments I wondered if I was completely in over my head (ok, this is daily 😉). But then -- I'd hear from a mom whose child could finally use sunscreen without a reaction. Or someone with rosacea who finally found a mineral SPF they looked forward to putting on every morning. Or someone who now uses SPF daily for the first time in 60 years. All of your stories remind me that this was always bigger than just sunscreen. Looking back, I think not coming from the beauty industry was actually our greatest advantage. We weren't trying to make mineral sunscreen fit the category or jump on a trend. We were trying to change the experience completely. Not because we followed the rules, because we questioned them (and still do). And because we never stopped believing sensitive skin deserved better than what most brands offer us. Being in my 40s isn’t a decline…it’s my renaissance ✨ Some say a pause is the end, but I’ve learned it’s really a fresh beginning. At 40, after a career pause, I launched Solara, a brand built on renewal, and resilience. That pause gave me the courage to reinvent myself and create something I’m incredibly proud of. I’m grateful for @bluemercury , a partner who shares the vision of celebrating evolution and rewriting what beauty looks and feels like after 40. What’s next? The most radiant chapter yet: growing Solara with intention, wandering through Europe to dream and create (and estate!), and devoting time to a personal passion project that lights me up inside.
