“Traitor’s Game: A Mick Blackwell Mystery” is a novel. But that doesn't mean it's all fiction. Meet the Nazis of Copley Square. https://stephenkimber.substack.com/p/mick-blackwells-search-for-the-fictional?r=58tj81&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true by @stephen.e.kimber

"Elegant Blonde was far from the only rumoured spy operating in Halifax. There was also a mysterious, cello-playing young woman who’d arrived in Halifax from somewhere in South America and enrolled at Mount Saint Vincent Women’s College just as the war began. The college, of course, was conveniently located on a hill overlooking Bedford Basin where the convoys assembled. The woman arrived with two cello cases. One contained her instrument; the other supposedly held secret transmitting equipment she used to send reports on ships’ movements in and out of Halifax harbour back to Germany...."
“Traitor’s Game: A Mick Blackwell Mystery” is a novel. But that’s not to say there aren’t some actual facts mixed and melded in, then twisted for the sake of the story. Like spies and sabotage…

I’ve belatedly decided to join the authorly hordes and do a little “Substacking.”
I’ll be posting semi-regularly, about writing in general and my own projects in particular, but with a few shocked-and-appalled commentaries on the state of the world thrown in for good measure.
In the next few weeks leading up to the launch of "Traitor’s Game: A Mick Blackwell Mystery," I’ll share a few of the real stories that inspired the World War II Halifax fiction in "Traitor’s Game."
Please feel free to subscribe. It’s free. by @stephen.e.kimber

News stories about the battle to create a washroom for female MLAs inside the Saskatchewan legislature building are a reminder of how Canadian feminist trailblazer Alexa McDonough dealt with the same issue in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly in the 1980s.

Operation Fish was a secret World War II scheme to spirit Britain’s gold reserves to Canada to keep them from falling into Nazi hands. If it had failed, the war might have ended very differently. From "Sailors, Slackers and Blind Pigs: Halifax at War."
