A flock of brown pelicans lifting off a sea stack into fog, photographed by Stephen Schmid (@stephen.schmid). The rocks in the foreground are lichen-covered granite with orange and grey staining, the offshore stack white with guano. The overcast flattens everything to a narrow tonal range, which is what makes the birds read so cleanly against the grey sky. Nothing here was staged or chased: this is the kind of image that happens when you're already in the right place with the right patience. Stephen came to photography seriously in 2017 after a career in software engineering, and this is the kind of frame that reflects time spent watching rather than just shooting.

The eclipse from Waxahachie, Texas. We awoke to completely overcast skies, but the clouds kept moving through, so we had a beautiful partly cloudy sky during the partial phase, which then opened for a gorgeous view of totality.
