Another ridiculously hot day, 30C. I went on a mission to Hanmer Mere, to see if could get some Welsh records for Lesser Emperor Dragonflies (Anax parthenope). I succeeded and after a lot of trying in the baking heat, got a few blurry photos of Lesser Emperor in flight. The thing with record shots, is you just need to see what they are. Then on the way back, I saw this Humming-bird Hawkmoth, forlornly trying to find some flowers. I then spent the rest of the day, recovering. by @stephenmbarlow

Lesser Emperor Dragonfly (Anax parthenope). I was seeing a lot of reports of these, which used to be only an occasional migrant, from Continental Europe. So I thought I'd check out Marbury Big Mere, as it seemed a likely place, and was rewarded with lots of views. It was incredibly hot, so they hardly settled, hence having to get in flight shots as record photos. There seems to be a big influx of them this year, and undoubtedly climate change is resulting in them expanding their range. by @stephenmbarlow

Norfolk Hawkers (Aeshna isoceles) in Shropshire, at Whixall Moss NNR. They were first recorded there last year, and in Shropshire, the year before that. So they must have successfully bred. They used to be found only in Norfolk, and just over the border in Suffolk, and are Britain's only legally protected dragonfly. Classed as endangered. But they have started turning up at random places around the country. At first just in the south, and then wider afield. I don't know if the reason for this is understood, but I think it is almost certainly climate related. I think it was first recorded in the country in the mid-19th Century in Norfolk and the Cambridgeshire Fens, but they declined a lot due to habitat loss, the draining of the Fens. It first appeared in Kent in I think 2011, and then after in other counties.I think this is certainly climate related, because the distribution in the UK stayed the same for about 160 years. It is far more widespread in Continental Europe, and Norfolk tends to get warmer more continental summers. by @stephenmbarlow
