If youโ€™re in New York on Tuesday night, please join @johnfdempsey and me at @sageusa where weโ€™ll be speaking about his ambitious book, Fire Island Art: 100 Years, published by @monacellipress / @phaidonpress (in which my work is included). It is the first book to ever survey the history of art on Fire Island, which is long storied, and very important to Queer art history (and art history in general).

Fire Island Art: 100 Years
Book Talk with John Dempsey & Stephen Truax
Tuesday, August 18
6:00 - 7:30 PM

SAGE at the Edie Windsor Center
305 7th Avenue, Floor 15
New York, NY 10001
Free and open to the public. RSVP required.
Link in bio.

John, who is the president of the @pineshistory , but who would be the first person to tell you heโ€™s not an art world professional, came up with this idea all on his own. He crowdsourced funding for it and got it published. It is so empowering that Fire Island โ€” imbued with a creative spirit and artistic community so palpable โ€” inspired John, who had never done a project like this before, to take it upon himself to make a 304 page history book out of it.

Fairfield Porter: What Everyone Knows, organized by @samsackeroff at the Art Studentโ€™s League of New York. โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ I canโ€™t wait to go back. Do not miss this show before it closes August 18.

Fairfield Porter
Jimmy and John, 1957โ€“58
Oil on canvas
36 x 45 in.

From the wall label: โ€˜John Ashbery โ€ฆ and James Schuyler, poets who, like Porter, were alert to the richness of everyday life and often associated that richness with visual experience. Even though they were as much as twenty years younger than him, these poets became some of Porterโ€™s closest peers โ€ฆ Porter remarked in 1956 that Ashbery โ€ฆ and Schuyler had a โ€œpoint of viewโ€ that he found โ€œmore sympatheticโ€ than artists of his own generation. That sympathy likely had to do both with their homosexuality, which allowed Porter to explore his own bisexuality, and with their shared artistic project.โ€™ taken in The Art Students League of New York by @stephentruax

EXHIBITION EXTENDED

Stephen Truax
โ€œAgain for the first timeโ€
June 6 - July 10, 2026
747 N Western Ave, Los Angeles, CA

The process of painting this body of work, courtesy of Stephen Truax:

โ€œThese works all result from the same rudimentary exercise: painting from observation in gouache on watercolor tablet. But the simplest task can prove to be continuously challenging: I use a custom portable setup to paint from direct observation in single, one-shot sessions. Painting outside forces you to wrestle with a dozen variables at once, carefully recording the light, space, atmosphere, and color, like taking field notes, before the day gets away from you.

The artist Josephine Halvorson recently remarked in an artist talk, โ€œGouache reveals each mark and thus each observation in real time as it is recorded.โ€ Even paintings made in the same session at the same site yield very different results. Not just because the light changed but because Iโ€™m looking differentlyโ€ฆโ€
