I watched 104 movies this year, and here are the ones I cannot stop thinking about. 🎬🍿 while you’re here, I want to say a few things about the state of watching movies.
1. For the past 4 years I’ve watched a mix of old and new movies, and this year more than the others, I noticed a serious regression in new diverse stories getting wide releases. Aside from books, I believe movies are our easiest exposure to stories unlike our own, so as you build your watchlists in 2026, I encourage you to fill it with the widest range of people possible.
2. In a world seeking community, going to the movies is powerful. It’s one of the last places where you sit next to people and everyone has the same ticket, the same accesss to the art. Nicole Kidman is right you know- we come to the place to laugh, to cry!
3. Every time an original movie gets made, its literally a miracle. So many things have to come together. Which is why Sinners was an easy pick for my number one. It’s a miracle this movie got made, and if you look across the development, production, even the marketing, there is magic and research, and excellence across every bit of it. If you haven’t seen it, I really think it should be your first watch of the year. If you’ve seen it, and ever get the chance to see it in 70mm, I couldn’t recommend it enough!

Every year I watch 100 movies that are new to me, purely for the enjoyment of it, and to combat my serial rewatching tendencies. Here are the top 5 movies that I’ve seen in the first half of the year:

1. Sinners: no surprise here because this is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. This is now streaming on HBOMax, but if you ever get the chance to see this in theaters, it’s what big screens were made for.
2. Train To Busan: I’m about 11 years late to the party, but happy to be here now. Now on Netflix.
3. Kneecap: the way this story about an Irish rap group had me leaning IN. Definitely one of 2024’s underrated movies. Now on Netflix.
4. The Black Bag: I’m never going to turn away a heist directed by Steven Soderbergh!!!!! If you are an Oceans trilogy fan like I am, you need to see this because it didn’t get the love it deserved. Now on Peacock.
5. One Of Them Days: a return to form for the 2000s hangout/shenanigans genre! If you grew up watching Friday way too young, this is for you (for us, really). I haven’t heard a theater laugh as much as they did during this in a very, very long time. Now on Netflix.

I wanna be 30. Thirty and flirty and thriving. ✨
What a privilege it is to age and be surrounded by a myriad of love, to get older and find that so much of yourself has actually been with you all along, to have an abundance of good behind you and just as much (if not more) ahead of you!
My heart feels so full.
