The most powerful move in high-conflict co-parenting?

Become fucking boring to provoke.

Stop writing the essay.
Stop defending your character.
Stop correcting every lie.
Stop trying to make someone committed to misunderstanding you finally “get it.”

That is how they keep access to you.
Not through the message.

Through your reaction to it.

Real power is when they send the same bait they’ve always sent and get absolutely nothing useful back.

No spiral.
No argument.
No emotional hangover.
No ruined night in your own home.

Because high-conflict people lose a lot of power when your nervous system stops being available for hire.

You don’t win when they change.

You win when they can no longer change you.

This is going to trigger the parents currently committed to their egos 🫠

1. They need permission to love both homes. Loving their other parent, step parent or siblings isn’t a betrayal of you.

2. They don’t want to be interrogated when they come home. ‘How was your weekend?’ feels very different to 20 questions designed to find out what happened at the other house.

3. Changeover can be emotionally exhausting. A quiet, withdrawn or dysregulated child isn’t necessarily telling you something went wrong. Sometimes they’re simply transitioning.

4. They shouldn’t be responsible for adult communication. They’re your child. Not your messenger, mediator or source of information.

5. They need to be allowed to miss the other home. Missing Mum while they’re with Dad doesn’t mean they don’t want Dad. Missing Dad while they’re with Mum doesn’t mean they’d rather be there.

6. They hear more than you think. The eye rolls. The sarcastic comments. The tone when the other parent’s name is mentioned. You don’t have to directly badmouth someone for a child to feel your resentment.

7. They need you to manage your emotions so they don’t have to. A child should never have to minimise their excitement, hide affection or edit their stories because they’re worried about how an adult might react.

Children can adapt incredibly well to living between two homes.

What makes it hard isn’t always the two homes.

Sometimes it’s feeling like they have to become two different versions of themselves to keep the adults in each one comfortable.

Your job isn’t to make them choose where they belong.

It’s to make sure they know they belong in both.

Your partner’s inability to set boundaries with their ex will destroy your relationship faster than the kids ever will. Most blended family problems are adult leadership problems disguised as “kid issues.”

Being a stepmum does not mean abandoning yourself to prove you’re a good person. Self-sacrifice without boundaries always turns into resentment eventually.

Children do not need access to every adult conversation, conflict, or emotional reaction. Protecting kids emotionally sometimes means they don’t get a front row seat to everything.

You can love your partner deeply and still struggle with the reality of blended family life. Those two things can exist together without making you toxic.

“Keeping the peace” is usually emotional self-abandonment wearing a gold star. Silence doesn’t create healthy homes. Honest conversations do.

Not every high-conflict ex is “just hurt.” Some people genuinely struggle with control, accountability, boundaries, and letting go.

Your relationship has to become the leadership team of the home. If the adults are divided, reactive, guilt-ridden, or walking on eggshells, the entire house feels it.

Stop expecting stepmums to parent like biological mums while constantly reminding them they’re “not the real parent.” You cannot demand emotional labour from someone while invalidating their role at the same time.

Some of you are spending more time trying to win over a woman who doesn’t like you than actually building a life you love.

You analyse her behaviour. Obsess over what she thinks. Rehearse conversations she’ll never hear. And keep bending yourself into someone you think might finally be accepted.

For what?

You are literally abandoning yourself in pursuit of someone else’s approval.

And the hardest truth? She doesn’t even have to be thinking about you for you to be giving her this much power.

At some point, you’ve got to stop asking why she doesn’t like you and start asking why her opinion of you matters more than your own.

You don’t need her approval to belong in your own fucking life.

Stop trying to be chosen by someone you don’t even need to choose you.

You cannot control the ex. You cannot control other people’s behaviour. And you certainly cannot control every circumstance life throws at you.

But you can learn to stop letting those circumstances dictate your emotional state.

That’s where your power is.

After 26 years of co-parenting, @_vickidean_ understands that peace isn’t found in getting everyone else to behave differently.

It’s found in your ability to remain grounded when they don’t.

Because the goal isn’t to have a life without conflict.

It’s to stop making every conflict your emotional responsibility.

In this episode of Step Parent Podcast, @_vickidean_ and I unpack stepmotherhood, co-parenting, emotional neutrality and what it really means to lead yourself.

Your child is not responsible for carrying the emotional consequences of a relationship YOU couldn’t make work.

Your resentment. Your jealousy. Your anger. Your unresolved wounds.

They’re yours to deal with.

When a child feels they have to reject, dislike or emotionally protect one parent to remain loyal to the other, we’re no longer talking about ordinary co-parenting disagreements.

We’re talking about emotional manipulation that can become emotional abuse and contribute to parental alienation.

You’re the adult. Do the fucking work.

Your child deserves a childhood, not a lifetime of recovering from yours.

I became a step mum at 24, here’s what I wish someone had told me this sooner.

You cannot control other people. Stop trying.

Not everything a child says is the truth, and not everything is about you. Put your ego down.

And for the love of God, stop putting your relationship last in the name of being a good parent.

Your children are watching what love looks like. Give them something healthy to learn from.

10 years later, the biggest lesson?

Being a stepmum will expose parts of you that you didn’t even know needed work.

And it’s your responsibility to do that work.

Send this to a stepmum who needs the reminder. 🤍

Your children should never feel responsible for holding your relationship together.

But when children witness conflict without repair, they can begin to internalise the tension, question their security and feel responsible for emotions that were never theirs to manage.

And this doesn’t just apply to married parents.

It applies to separated parents, co-parents and blended families too.

Your children don’t need to witness a perfect relationship.

They need to witness what accountability, emotional regulation and healthy repair actually look like.

Because how you handle conflict is teaching your children what relationships feel like.

And that’s a lesson they’ll carry long after the argument is over.

🎙️ @thegabriellapomare joins me on Step Parent Podcast for an honest conversation about relationships, separation, co-parenting and protecting children from adult conflict.

We’ve become so uncomfortable challenging harmful parenting behaviours that we’ve started confusing accountability with an attack.

I don’t care if you’re a biological mum, dad, stepmum or stepdad. Your title doesn’t exempt you from accountability.

If you’re manipulating children, weaponising their emotions or conditioning them to reject someone you don’t like, I’m going to challenge it.

Your resentment doesn’t belong to your children.

My content isn’t anti-biological parent.

It’s pro-child, pro-emotional intelligence and pro-accountability.

And if that makes you uncomfortable, perhaps it’s worth asking yourself why.

Your children are learning about relationships by watching yours.

And it’s not necessarily the disagreement that does the damage. It’s the tension that follows, the silence, the unresolved conflict and the uncertainty about what happens next.

Children notice far more than we give them credit for.

When they witness conflict without repair, they can start feeling responsible for fixing something that was never theirs to carry.

But when they see adults take accountability, apologise, regulate their emotions and reconnect, they learn something incredibly valuable.

Conflict doesn’t have to mean abandonment. Disagreement doesn’t have to mean disconnection.

And relationships can experience difficult moments without falling apart.

This is especially important in blended families, where children may already carry fears around separation, rejection and relationships ending.

You don’t need to model a perfect relationship.

You need to model what healthy repair looks like.

A biological mum and a stepmum having a conversation that might just challenge the way you think about blended families.

And honestly? We need more of these conversations.

I sat down with @thegabriellapomare, divorce lawyer, author, podcast host and mum of two, to unpack the realities of life after separation.

Two women with very different experiences of motherhood, but a shared belief that children should never be responsible for managing the emotions of the adults around them.

We talk about the uncomfortable stuff. The resentment, the control, the communication breakdowns, the new partners, the boundaries and the patterns that keep families stuck in conflict long after the relationship has ended.

Because you can have a completely different perspective from someone and still want the same outcome for the children involved.

And sometimes understanding the other side is exactly what allows things to change.

Whether you’re a biological mum, step mum, dad or stepdad, I hope this conversation makes you feel a little less alone, a little more understood and perhaps challenges you to look at something differently.

Some wounds don’t come from strangers. They come from the very people who were supposed to make you feel safe. 💔

Growing up, I knew what it felt like to question my worth. To feel like I wasn’t enough. To feel like I had to earn love, acceptance and a place where I belonged.

And the hardest part? Those feelings don’t just disappear when you become an adult.

They follow you into your relationships, your self-worth and the way you see yourself.

Maybe that’s why this work means so much to me.

Because I know firsthand what happens when a child grows up feeling like they don’t matter.

I can’t go back and change my childhood, but I can use my story to help change another child’s experience.

No child should ever have to spend their adult life healing from the people who were meant to love them. ❤️‍🩹

This is bigger than coaching for me.

It’s personal. It’s my purpose. And it’s a cycle I’m determined to help break. 🤍
