Spooky stories of the dental office 👻 🦷

I’ve heard sooo much about waterlines and honestly sometimes it felt overwhelming

So when my office got a new owner it was the perfect time to start a waterline protocol.

And it was wayyy easier than I thought.

Using a company like Sterisil that has all your waterline needs (test, shock and maintenance) makes it so easy.

Shocking lines can be done as a form of maintenance but it must be done when a test fails.

My office has established a protocol after getting all the ops to pass their tests. We are testing monthly until all the ops pass and then we will just test and shock quarterly.

We use so much water in dentistry make sure your water is safe and harboring any harmful microbes.

Do you have a waterline maintenance protocol?

Let’s talk about SHOCKING your dental unit waterlines! 💧🦠

Because treating your waterlines daily is important, but routine shocking plays a different role in biofilm management.

Research has shown that combining periodic shocking with continuous antimicrobial treatment resulted in an 88% waterline testing pass rate, compared with:

* 60% with shocking alone
* 58% with daily treatment alone

That’s a pretty compelling reason to have BOTH in your waterline maintenance protocol!

Here are a few things I want every dental office to understand:

💧 TEST BEFORE YOU SHOCK! When performing routine shocking, collect your waterline samples BEFORE shocking so you can evaluate how your ongoing treatment protocol is performing. Testing immediately after shocking doesn’t tell you the same story.

💧 Don’t forget the bottle! One of my favorite things about Citrisil Shock is that you can coat the inside of your dental unit water bottle as directed, helping clean and disinfect it without sticking questionable sponges or brushes inside.

And remember, shocking does NOT replace daily waterline treatment. Follow the manufacturer’s IFU for your specific system, including shock frequency, contact time, flushing, and testing.

Your goal? Dental treatment water that consistently meets the CDC recommendation of ≤500 CFU/mL of heterotrophic bacteria. by @sterisilsafewater

"Use a mild detergent."

Sounds simple enough... until you start asking questions.

What detergent? What about bleach? Can it be autoclaved?

When it comes to cleaning a dental water bottle, the answer may already be in your maintenance protocol. Citrisil Shock is included in the Instructions for Use for cleaning compatible bottles, helping you clean without brushes, bleach, or residue.

Biofilm doesn't take a month off, and your shocking protocol shouldn't either.

Without routine maintenance shocking, biofilm can begin forming in as little as 5 days and becomes increasingly difficult to eliminate as it matures. With routine Citrisil™ Shock treatment, practices can support healthier dental unit waterlines and maintain water quality goals.

✅ Recommended best practice: Shock monthly.

Are your waterlines due for a shock?
