@russdilly was 39 years old yesterday. @snowbowlsd is a quad and inline pool competition held at City Heights Skatepark in San Diego, California. There were nine skaters competing between both quad and inline that travelled from as far as New York and the San Francisco Bay Area and as close as down the street. Our main goal was to bring two communities together, as well as strengthen the community of skaters in the greater San Diego area. We wanted to create a competition that was fun but challenging, hoping to push skaters out of their comfort zones. We noticed a lack of community in San Diego and realized not a lot of events were happening down here, so we thought up Snowbowl—we figure if you want to see a change in your community you have to be the change. If we want our industries and communities to grow, we have to put the effort in to showing up and being present. Although it is a competition, our main goal was to have fun and show everyone that we can support each other’s communities—when one of us wins, we all do. Starting at 4:53 at the end of our session light was getting low. @piotrek_gbyl exhausted but not done yet. Sees this mess of a bank to fence. He and the the guys have come so far just to skate this I think to myself. @hedonskate is ready to film. I’m still figuring out how I wanna shoot this photo and I’m running out of time. Good thing is he’s young if I ask him to do it again he probably will. This is how it went down. September until now has honestly felt like a blur. Hayden received his pro skate at the very end of September, and suddenly I had about two months to find time in my schedule to shoot photos for him. Most days were extremely productive, and Hayden put everything he had into filming. There were multiple tricks where I only had one chance to get the shot—which is never a comfortable place to be. The pressure of shooting something worthy of use is usually manageable, but this was my first time shooting a full professional profile. Regardless of how the images were going to be used, I wanted them to feel intentional, professional, and well composed. While Travis, as the videographer, and Jon focused their energy on hyping Hayden up for stunts, I documented everything as it unfolded. There were moments I thought I missed the shot, or that the photos had too many flaws—but I pressed on. Hayden and I have a long history together, and it was a pleasure to support him and Echo Brand Pro Skate during such a major milestone in his career. I’m genuinely stoked I got to share that time with him. This year I also had the opportunity to spend time with Ryan Schude and pick up some valuable shooting advice when we went to LA for a specific trick with Hayden. We snapped this photo together just before Hayden received his pro skate, and that moment really helped build my confidence—to trust my instincts and try to create something meaningful that might be remembered, the same way Schude’s skate photos stuck with me. After shooting Hayden, Blading Cup came along, and I’ve still been working on my article for ONE. I think everyone will enjoy revisiting that joy one more time as winter keeps us off our blades. More work coming soon. Thanks to everyone for watching, supporting, and letting me share a few words. Happy New Year—remember to be grateful for the small things that help us all keep moving forward.
